Completed my first ever attempt on the GMAT last week with the GMAT focus and got a 715! My goal was to break 700, so I’m very happy with my score. Here are my percentiles and the order in which I completed the sections:
- Verbal: 87 (99th Percentile)
- Quant: 85 (89th Percentile)
Took a break between Quant and DI
- DI: 84 (98th Percentile)
Candidly, quant and verbal were fairly in-line with the GMAT Focus official mocks (I did 5 of the 6 in the month before the test), but I did find DI significantly more challenging. On DI, there was one two-part analysis question that I found really difficult and some challenging DS questions. Could also just be my perception due to test fatigue (since I did DI third).
On Verbal, I followed my usual strategy of going through a fairly consistent pace and bookmarking questions I wanted to review. Once I finished the questions, I looked at my bookmarks and noticed I had 6 questions bookmarked – I had ~5 minutes left on the test and ended up just changing one answer (the change ended up making me get the question right). I missed one RC question, and I didn’t miss a single CR question which has never happened before in my mocks (I usually miss 2-3).
Quant was very similar to mocks as stated earlier – there were two questions I probably burned too much time on, and it left me less than a minute on the last question (ended up guessing here).
I’m happy with the score but do feel that I could’ve improved my quant score (aced the quant section in my last 3 mocks), so I may retake a couple more times (especially because of some of the chatter that percentiles from the conversion chart published may be updated this summer once GMAC has more Focus test data).
Mock scores were:
- Mock 1: 675
- Mock 2: 725
- Mock 3: 655
- Mock 4: 715
- Mock 5: 735
Happy to answer any questions on prep – TTP was critical to my success on quant. Took me ~3 months of studying (while balancing with my full-time job) to get through the TTP content. After TTP, I focused exclusively on practicing with official content (OG Book, OG section-specific books, Extra question banks) but frequently went back to TTP to study ‘theory’ on quant topics. I used PowerScore Critical Reasoning as well which was very helpful on verbal. In retrospect, I wish I spent more time prepping for DI (OG DI 200-question pack, etc.), specifically two-part analysis and DS questions. Also want to underscore how important it is to have healthy habits in the days leading up to the test - I suffer a lot from anxiety and it was especially bad the night before the test (I maybe got ~2 hours of sleep before the test), hence why I want to take the exam again when I'm hopefully less anxious!
