GMATNinja For Quant HW #3, I can do a lot of the general systems of linear equations, but occasionally there's ones that are much longer to complete or stump me while working through. E.g. -5x+4y=-46 and 3x+47=-30

Using substitution, at one step I wasn't able to quickly deduce 288/32 for this one.

Am I expected to be able to solve the above example in 90 secs?

Substitution is only one way to solve systems of linear equations. Don't forget about elimination!

Was the second equation you gave supposed to be 3x + 4y = -30? If so, you can easily solve that system by multiplying one of the two equations by -1 and then adding the equations.

The "fun" part about elimination is that there are usually multiple different ways to go about it. So you want to take a few seconds to "think before you act" and try to come up with what you think will be an efficient approach. That skill will be very important as you tackle official GMAT questions.

For more on linear algebra, check out this video.

I hope that helps a bit!

You certainly could use official GMAT materials only for verbal, and skip the LSATs. The downside is that you'd miss out on the delightful data that LSAT sets provide, as discussed throughout the study plan. There's not much variation in difficulty (or length) from one LSAT section to the next, so it's easier to track your progress over time with LSATs than with GMAT sets -- which do, of course, vary enormously in difficulty as you move through the OGs.

All of the CR and RC from recent editions of the GMAT OGs is baked into the study plan, but if you need more practice than that, you might want to see if you can track down a copy of older editions of the OG and verbal guide. For example, if you use the 12th edition of the OG and the 2nd edition of the Verbal Guide, you won't see many questions that overlap the current versions -- and the question format really isn't different at all.

So maybe see if you can find those old books, instead of shelling out for LSAT stuff?

I hope that helps a bit!

Take "The Next 10 Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests" for example, there are 10 RC sections in this book with 4 passages each section, so a total of 40 LSAT RC passages. In fact, all 40 passages are already in GMAT Club's RC question bank.

I recently put together the links to all these 40 LSAT RC passages, in my post Practice LSAT RC Passages by Section - The Next 10 LSAT PrepTests 29 - 38.

Hope this helps a bit.

Sorry to hear that those are giving you trouble!

Two things are possible here: either you need some time to work on your fundamental arithmetic skills, or something weird is happening with the specific arithmetic questions you're seeing on the forum. (Or both, conceivably.)

Unfortunately, it's really hard for me to guess which one of these things is the biggest culprit. I'd ask yourself this: are you struggling with fundamental non-GMAT-specific arithmetic tasks, like adding fractions, simplifying roots, working with decimals, or dividing/multiplying two-digit numbers?

If those tasks are hard for you, you might need to spend some extra time working on the basics. We don't really address those basic foundations directly in this study plan, but it's possible that some of the GMAT Club quant resources (provided in the study plan) will help, or you could try something like Khan Academy.

If those basics are NOT the problem, then it's possible that you're seeing an unusual selection of questions when you do those sets of 555-level exercises. In that case, I'd put it this way: are you doing OK on the official guide sets? If so, you're probably on track.

I hope that helps a bit!

Hi - I just finished the 13-week plan, and the exam yesterday, but am disappointed with my score. Any advice on where to go from here? Planning to retake in the next 20 days. I scored significantly lower than many of my practice exams. Is there 1-on-1 tutoring that can help me analyze my score report and other practice exam score reports? (At a reasonable price :)) Thank you!

Hi GMATNinja, is it okay if I use the Kaplan LSAT PrepTests? Also the 2023-24 OG instead?

I don’t have access to LSAT books for verbal. Is it okay if I pick up the Verbal Review 2019?
We recommend the LSAT for all of the reasons mentioned here: https://gmatclub.com/forum/why-you-shou ... 39365.html.

It's not the end of the world if you wanted to skip the LSATs. It's just that LSATs give you really, really clear data about your consistency from day to day, since every LSAT section is roughly the same difficulty and length. And they'll really challenge your ability to power your way through complicated language.

If the problem is that you can't get access to the books, you can always find LSAT tests via LawHub. If you'd just prefer not to do them, that's OK -- just be aware that you'll miss out on some challenges and data that are usually incredibly valuable for test-takers with lofty verbal ambitions.

Also, keep in mind that the 2019 Verbal Guide will have some questions that also appear in the newer versions of the Verbal Guide. So interpret the results accordingly if you decide to use that book.

I hope that helps!

If Kaplan's LSAT PrepTests are still licensed from the LSAT's creators, then yes: it's completely fine to use them. Before you use them, just make sure that they're official questions, and not questions that Kaplan created.

The 2023-24 OG is totally fine, too. The 2024-25 editions have a few extra things that are nice to have -- a handful of new questions, including some extra non-math DS questions. But they really aren't essential, and the 2023-24 OGs are fine.

Have fun studying!

Charles!!! I retook the test two more times since this last post and am now psyched with my score!!! Massive Massive improvement from the first official test I mentioned below. Thank you so so much for setting this up!!!

I would say one improvement is for Week 13 to discuss more about the days leading up to the test. I think TTP has a good bunch of videos online about Test Day and stuff, but could be helpful to post some on that Week's link.

Additionally, maybe include a "Week 14" or where to go from there if you don't get the score you would like the first time. Maybe something along the lines of how to do an in-depth analysis of a score report. I also found it very helpful to crank through the GMAT Club sectional tests to gain additional exposure to problems.

Thank you again for everything you do, I truly appreciate the effort you've put into this plan. I think the plan was excellent and laid out very well - I loved the combination of book problems in the beginning with videos and then shifting towards computer-focused problems. You guys are geniuses!!!

Congratulations on the huge improvement, Clay20049! You've absolutely made my day. And I'm not just saying that to be nice! We obviously put a ton of work into the study plan, but there's only so much we could do to make it easy to use -- and I realize that very few people make it all the way through.

So even if you didn't make a huge leap, you would absolutely deserve a cookie just for surviving this thing. And you deserve a whole freaking cake for managing to make a massive improvement. :)

It's funny: I've had a Week 14 post in mind from the very beginning of this project several years ago, and I never actually wrote it. Good to hear that it might actually be useful for some people -- that's a nice nudge for us to make it a priority. And thank you for the feedback on the test-day preparations -- we have quite a bit of that content peppered throughout the study plan, but it's a great idea to add it all to Week 13, for anybody who missed it or could benefit from re-watching it.

Thank you again for the wonderful message, and congratulations again!

GMATNinja, Thanks for the plan. I quickly went through contents of all weeks and looks like there are 17 RC sets, 18 CR sets from LSATs for practice. Yet you suggested that 1 book (preferably tests 29-38) is adequate. The book contains only 10 RC sets. Do you recommend purchasing a second book?

(Verbal) As for questions from older OG versions in some weeks are the links provided to GMAT club questions the same? Or do we need to purchase an older OG for this?

Hello, GMATNinja could I please ask a question, should I repeat every homework for each given week every day? I mean for example the homework for Quant Week 1 is

5. A set of 25 sub-555 algebra problem-solving questions, available here. Yes, they’re easy. That’s exactly the point – please don’t make any sloppy mistakes!
6. Official Guide Problem Solving #1-25
7. A set of 25 sub-555 arithmetic PS questions, available here

Should I do these sets every day for the first week?

Thank you very much for your clarification !
