Hi all,
I took the GMAT Online test early this month and would like to share my experience and seek help on my retake strategies.
After around a couple of months of preparation, I booked my first attempt at GMAT.
Exam experience:I checked in 30 mins early as suggested by GMAC in their instructions.
The process was quick and I started my exam 20 mins before my slot.
Note: You will receive a link on your mobile which will enable you to upload images of your surroundings and also of your photo ID. My passport was almost 10 years old, so I had to upload multiple times to ensure the system matches my picture with the one in the passport. I wasn't aware of this before checking in.
Ensure you pick the quietest corner in your room away from outside disturbances
After the exam:I felt the questions are at the same level as the official GMAT mocks (I don't know if this is true given my verbal score). I ended quant with around 15 mins to spare and ended verbal with a minute to spare (This has been the trend in all of my mocks too)
So, after my exam, I was confident that I'll get a 730 atleast since I clocked an average of 730+ (Q50+, V36+) in all my mocks before the exam.
I received the official score within 2 days and shocked to see 710 (Q51 and V34)
What's making it more difficult is that I'm not yet clear on what my improvement areas in verbal are since I can't order an ESR for online delivery of GMAT. I would like to give another shot at GMAT. I barely spent time on my quant preparation before my first attempt, I don't think I'll need to spend any extra effort for my 2nd attempt too.
Let me also plug in my background.I'm an Indian male engineer who is working as a management consultant in Big4 with 3+ years of international experience across 4 countries. My undergrad is from IIT Kharagpur with Avg GPA (Which is why I'm targeting a high GMAT).
I'm planning to apply for global top 20 B-schools and planning to apply for round 2 this cycle with a better GMAT score.
Question 1: Is applying with a 710 for round 1 better than applying with a better score in round 2 - with my background? How much should I target?
Question 2: I also request the experts here on how my retaking strategy should be. What books / courses should I refer for verbal (I used Kaplan for basics, OG19 and OG13 for problems and few LSAT questions for RC and CR). I exhausted all my official mocks as well. So, I request some suggestions on prep mocks too.
Please also bear in mind that to make it to round 2 applications I require some practical suggestions so that I can retake GMAT in a month while working for 60+ hours a week.
