Hello my saviors,
I know the title sounds stupid because GMAT prep can take months and rapid prep isn't a viable option... but COVID has thrown me a curveball:
the PhD programme I want to apply for has moved its 1st round of applications deadline forward by 2 months (to December 2020), removed the 2nd application round completely (planned for 4 months after the Round 1 initial date) and my country has been placed back into lockdown ( = no in-person GMAT).
I had to pick an online date that was available at the latest date to allow extra studying but also to get results fast enough to send in my application by the deadline. My initial plan was to prep for GMAT and send in my application for Round 2.
I've planned for a GMAT Online exam, date:
18th November 2020 (
8 days from now)... There is not enough time between the 18th and the deadline for a second test. Yes, it's a crazy plan.

- I started studying Wednesday 4th November and I'm confident I can get the score I need. I only received the info about the second application period being removed on the 3rd.
Tools I have available:
GMAT OG 2019 + GMAT 2019 Quant Review + GMAT 2019 Verbal Review + GMAT Advanced Questions.
I'm OK to purchase extra learning tools if they are validated by this community. I'm OK to work as many hours in the day as possible, I'm in lockdown and I have nowhere else to be.
Looking at other PhD programmes from the same Swiss university with adjacent research fields, on average they want GMAT = 660.
I'm fine with 660. I'm not interested in being a member of the 720+ club. I have top results in my current Master's so 660 would be enough to get my application to the top% of the pack. My specific PhD programme does not communicate its GMAT expectations. They even say that GMAT is optional but is highly recommended for applicants who do not have a Master's from the University's country (i.e. I have a Master's recognised by their admin but it's French, not Swiss).
My background:
BSc Bioinformatics + MSc Neuro. I've always taken the Science/Maths options at school/university.
English is my mother tongue but I've lived longer in France than in the UK so my bilingual brain sometimes mixes stuff up.
What I've done so far:
- Read all lessons in OG (
except AWA because I've chosen the GMAT Online)
- Done all Quant exercises in GMAT OG 2019 (I really struggled with the last 67 questions out of the 230 in the book = 19/67). The 163 questions before, I was satisfied with + I understand my mistakes.
- listed the types of Quant questions that I struggle with (as an example, I know I struggle with some questions on Rates "2 machines work at R and S rates over 6 days blablabla, how long to do the job simultaneously?". I also struggle with this sort of question: "if x and y two positive integers and k≠0, what is x^(k+y)?")
- I'll be finishing the Verbal exercises in GMAT OG 2019 today and posting results here
- OG Diagnostic test with bad results, as expected when discovering a new exam format for the 1st time: QUANT = PS 10/24; DS 9/24; VERBAL = RC 12/17; CR 12/17; SC 14/18.
- Hult mini simulation test: 620-650 (Q42-44; V35-36)
What I haven't even touched yet:
- Any IR questions
- GMAT 2019 Quant Review book
- GMAT 2019 Verbal Review book
- GMAT online question banks
What I want to take:
- GMAT official Prep exams 1 and 2 (No.1 = taking it today)
- Veritas Prep exams (I got 2 free by joining GMATClub
Thanks GMAT Club
)
- More online prep exams, which can you recommend?
No, it's not a perfect situation. No, I wouldn't do prep like this again.
Yes, I'm sure I want to go ahead with this.
Does anyone have ANY advice, please? Thanks!
