Hi guys,
I should have known this and there is probably answer on the GMAT official site. But just want to check for sure - how is GMAT scored? Base on the statement I found below, it seems to imply the 800 max score we always refer to here only comprises of Quant and Verbal, and AWA/IR are separate score? So does that mean the Schools will be able to see these split out separately. So if you get 700+ on Total Score but a bad AWA/IR score then it may still affect your chance of admission? Thanks.

That is correct. Integrated reasoning and analytical writing assessment or not figured or in other words do not contribute to the overall GMAT score. They agree graded separately.
As to your question, the answer is potentially. Admissions teams repeatedly indicate that they will not deny candidates because of a single number and it needs to be more of a pattern rather than a single occurrence. The IR and AWA are more of a pass/fail thing it seems. A very high score will not contribute to your success but a very little one can raise some flags. Many Business Schools have publicly stated that they don't use the IR score as part of the application process, but if you would like to know how a specific Program views the IR Score, then you can reach out directly and ask (most School's Admissions Departments will be glad to answer any application questions that you might have). As far as the AWA/Essay is concerned, many Programs expect that Applicants should be able to score at least a 4.0 (out of 6.0) - and that's actually a fairly easy Score to achieve (there are even templates that you can follow).
