Hi, I had appeared for GMAT casually once and scored 580. Now I am looking for notching a score above 700. Can anyone please suggest the best study material to kick off my preparation.

P.S- I already have the Manhattan verbal prep.

Hi,
I actually was in the same situation but I didn't take my first gmat attempt casually. I scored a 570. I was looking for a 100 point improvement. I took an online course called GMATWhiz and scored a 680 after two month study. I believe it would be helpful for you as well. All the best!

Hello Sanjog,

A score of 570 is close to decent, but not sufficient enough to get into a top university. All top-ranking universities will require a score of at least 700 or above. We would request to write us back with the section score for Verbal and Quant to assist you better.

GMAT is not as easy as we assume. GMAT math is logic, and GMAT verbal is a real test of English as a language. So, we recommend you to look for reliable resources.

Considering your present score (Q36, V34), we have two plans for you, which you must follow to reach your target score. Finding your target score as 700, remember various possible combinations to achieve a score of 700 or above: V37/Q50, V39/Q49, V43/Q45.

Plan 1: Basic concept building --- try 600 level question--- take mock test ---- learn alternative methods and shortcuts ---- try 700+ level question --- take mock tests.

For verbal– Revise your grammar basics by GMAT grammar book or Aristotle grail for sentence correction. For RC and CR, try solving the 700+ level question.
For math, yes, basics are musts. You should visit our website https://www.mathrevolution.com to check our free trial lessons and free videos.
To strengthen the basic concept on various topics like arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and word problems, you should opt for a 5-hour Math Review lesson. Solve as many questions as you can relate to different topics.

Plan 2: Once your basics are strong, we recommend learning quick and alternative approaches to solve questions to save you the time. Q 51 shortcut will help you do so. Keep checking your performance by taking mock tests. You may try our free diagnostic test once.

Let us know if you have further questions.
You can reach us at [email protected].

Success is within your reach.
Good luck!

Hi,

580 is a solid score to start with considering that you took the test without any preparation. An individual breakdown would have helped better. By now, you must have understood that GMAT tests the application of concepts. To score above 700, you need to have strong application skills and you need to put a considerable effort to learn them. Let me share a few insights on how to move forward.

What GMAT actually tests!

To score a 700+ on GMAT, you need to get easy-medium questions right. Only then you will be able to reach the 700 level questions. GMAT doesn’t give you questions which can be solved directly by using formulae. One needs to draw certain inferences by doing pre-analysis, and then identify what would be the best way to solve the question. Again, there can be multiple ways to solve a particular question, but identifying the best method so that you can solve it under 2 minutes is what you have to be good at. The good thing about GMAT quant is it tests only specific types of questions. So, knowing the right methods so solve those GMAT like questions will help you get a good score on quant.

Coming to Verbal, you need to approach each module in a certain way. For example,
  • to solve SC questions, you have to approach them from a meaning stand-point. Most students think that knowing grammatical rules would suffice, but what GMAT actually tests on SC is the ability to convey the right meaning without ambiguity.
  • To solve CR questions, you need to develop the ability to pre-think the answer before you jump into the solutions. For this, you need to understand the framework behind the question.
  • To solve RC questions, you need to have the right reading strategies so that you can read the passage in an inferential manner and draw proper inferences.

What should be the study plan!

To develop the application skills, you need to plan your preparation accordingly so that you can learn the concepts along with the methodologies. The study plan should help you to:
  • Learn the concepts
  • Learn the methodologies to solve the GMAT like questions
  • Take sectional quizzes for each topic and analyze the weaknesses based on the results. Move to the next topic only if you get at least easy-medium questions right.

Repeat the same for every topic. Once you are done with all the concepts, start taking mocks and work on your weaker areas. This should ideally get you a score of 720+.

If you are open to suggestions, I would like you to take a look at the course offered by GMATWhiz. It is one unique course which offers you a personalized study plan which is integrated with the course. It offers you the best quality content and employs an artificial intelligence driven learning. The concept booster and practice quizzes after every concept video help you solve GMAT like questions using the right methodology. It offers you real time improvement modules so that you can work on your weaker areas right away.

You can take a decision by checking out the free trial of GMATWhiz. If you wish to know more about the study strategy or about the course, you can schedule a free consultation call using the below link.
