Re: Gmat tutor [#permalink]
EMPOWERgmatRichC and rajatchopra1994,

I gave an in person test about a week ago and have been studying seriously for about two months before that and ended up scoring a 600. Q46 and V 27 or something. I cancelled my score report as I was highly disappointed and now do not exatly remember my score. I also had the exam anxiety as I did not give many mocks before the August 9th exam, so could not even apply the general process for SC and made mistakes in RC that could have been avoided.

I then worked the past couple of weeks on verbal exclusively using the MGMAT material and the gmatclub. Did a lot of OG stuff for quant but not so much for verbal. I have another exam slated for 31st of this month but I am not sure if its a good idea to give it . I was hoping to apply in the first round but now I think I will target second round and get done with gmat in the next few weeks with solid preparation.

I gave a veritas prep mock earlier today and scored a Q46 and V 30 . The previous veritas mock also was similar score.

My main challenges:
Unable to process/paraphrase wordy RCs (700-800 level)
Unable to find conclusions in CRs when there are no concluusion markers which is the case for 700-800 level questions in time .
Unable to get right answers within time for SC.
Getting confused btw "ing" and ed nouns, have zero knowledge of idioms as I am a non native speaker and its very disappointing as it feels like I might not be able to apply in first round now.

I would love to increase my quant score but I do not have the time when I concentrate on verbal .
Test anxiety on top of all this.

I work fulltime as an engineer and can spare about 2-3 hours everyday in the week and about 5-6 hours per day over the weekend.

I have already spent a ton of money on the previous tutoring without much use so now I do not know if I should just pick the magoosh/ TTP verbal couse with some 1:1 tutoring support .

Honest help will be appreciated as I already feel ripped off by my previous experiences.

Hi loh,

From the additional information that you have provided, there are a number of immediate factors that impacted your performance on Test Day. First, many GMATers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores, so if you studied for just 2 months, then you shouldn't expect to have 'mastered' any aspects of the Exam just yet. In addition, taking FULL-LENGTH CATs/mocks at regular intervals and under realistic testing conditions (that match-up with how you will take your Official GMAT) is an essential aspect of the GMAT training process. Without that type of data, you never knew what you actually needed to work on. With a Verbal Scaled Score in the high-V20s, you would have lost significant points in ALL 3 major Verbal categories - meaning that "700 level" Verbal questions are NOT what you should be focused on right now. In addition, with a Q46, there is a notable 'block' of Quant points that you could probably pick up if you just made some tweaks to how you 'see' (and respond to) that section of the Exam.

Since you took your GMAT at a Test Center, you might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

1) What is your overall goal score?
2) What Schools are you planning to apply to?
3) For your next attempt, are you planning to take the At-home GMAT or are you planning to take your GMAT at a Test Facility?
4) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?

Hi all ,

I wanna improve my score and I wanna apply in the second round for class of 2022.

I’m looking for private tutor to help me out with verbal so that I can improve on topics that I lack the most .

I already tutored with a private company and they matched with a tutor who knew nothing abt gmat in general and though it helped me to get to speed ,I do need more help.

Please help me out .

Hi loh,

Sorry to hear about your experience.

Private tutoring is the best option if you feel you need a personal mentor to guide you through your preparation. Your performance will be constantly monitored by the mentor and based on the feedback you can prepare accordingly. This mostly works when students face difficulty in understanding concepts and require a one-on-one interaction with tutors with personalised learning. As a working professional, you also need the flexibility of time as your schedule may permit. Moreover, if you feel you get distracted now and then, and need a mentor to keep you right on track till the end, I suggest you to go with private tutoring.

If you are open to suggestions, I would recommend you to check the private tutoring course offered by GMATWhiz. We offer you a tailor made learning experience with highly experienced teachers at an affordable price and help you indulge in flawlessly personalised learning process. Our tutors have a minimum of 10 years teaching experience and we offer a hybrid learning experience where we combine the best of online learning (technology) with private tutoring. Also, the round-the-clock availability feature allows you to book the slot of your choice not having to worry about our availability on your convenient time. We use an AI based learning platform to do 3 things:

1. Get you a personalized trackable study plan that adapts in real time
2. Track your performance on the portal against 20+ data points for each question.
3. Help you learn the basic concepts through video lessons, thereby saving the number of private tutoring hours you need. (These video lessons are created by the same experts who teach you)

The tutor uses these data points before each session to identify the gaps in your learning and create relevant content for discussion. Hence each session is 5 times more effective than those offered by other private tutors as you get pin-point advice on exact reasons behind your mistakes. As a result, you get the maximum output with minimum number of sessions.

You can check out the free demo on GMATWhiz and decide for yourself if it is the one you are looking for.
