Hello,

I am very confused by the algorithm for the verbal section in the GMAT prep CAT's:

V38 with 7 questions wrong
V42 with 6 questions wrong

I didn't have more than 2 consecutive wrong answers for either CAT. I'm hoping someone can help me to understand why the scores are so different?

The difficulty of the question also plays an important role. You are heavily penalized for getting an easy question wrong.

Hope this helps. ekp33

The number of incorrect questions has no bearing on the score. For instance, you can get a V40 with 10 incorrect questions. The score is based on a complex algorithm that takes several factors into consideration. Please review the 7 + 6 incorrect questions by finding the solutions in this forum; you can also check the difficulty level.

You're right - I went back and checked. In both exams, I got a mix of 600-700 and 700 level questions wrong, but in the later exam I got MORE 600-700 level questions wrong. Thank you for making me see that!

Hi ekp33,

I agree with much of what has been said. Your GMAT score is based on not only the number of questions you answer correct/incorrect, but also the difficulty of those questions, among other things. Thus, when scoring V37, you probably incorrectly answered some “lower-level” questions.

If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out.
