48/7 --> Remainder = 6 --> Tuesday

Hi All,

This type of story problem is essentially just about a repeating pattern and a 'remainder.'

We're told that Harriet planned to complete a certain task on WEDNESDAY, January 1, but because of illness the completion date was postponed 48 DAYS. We're asked on what day of the week the task was actually completed on.

Since the task was supposed to be completed on a Wednesday....

A 1 day postponement would be Thursday
A 2 day postponement would be Friday
A 3 day postponement would be Saturday
A 4 day postponement would be Sunday
A 5 day postponement would be Monday
A 6 day postponement would be Tuesday
A 7 day postponement would be Wednesday

A 8 day postponement would be Thursday
Etc.

So this question is ultimately asking how many 'groups of 7' are there, and how many 'leftover days' are there, when you postpone 48 days.

48/7 = 6 remainder 6

This means that there are 6 full weeks AND 6 extra days after a Wednesday....Thus, the task was completed on a Tuesday.

We can assume he finishes after 49 days. As 49/7 =7 =, he will finish on Wednesday. So Taking the day added to be 49. So he finishes one day before. It is Tuesday.

48/7 gives quotient as 6 and remainder as 6
quotient 6 means 6 full weeks have gone by till then
remainder 6 means 6 days after wednesday the task gets completed i.e. on tuesday
correct answer option B

The answer to this question is fairly easy.We don't have to use all the maths for such kind of questions and should rather save our energy for the tougher ones.So, let's use a little common sense.

Assume today is 31 dec and on 1st Jan that happens to be Wednesday I have to do something very important that I'm postponing till the 48th day of the year.

We all know that there are seven days in a week.So, 7*7=49.If the 1st January is Wednesday, so it will also be Wednesday on the 49th day of the year. Half of our job is almost done.We need to figure out which day will it be on 48th.Since we know that 49th is Wednesday so It will be Tuesday on 48th.
Thus, the correct answer is B.

Expected completion date is Wednesday; it's postponed for 48 days = 7 weeks - 1 day => we just need to go back 1 day, so the solution is Tue. => B

For this question, you may also fall into the trap of calculating which day is it in Feb (I almost falled in it in the first few secs).
