(A) it was believed by the employee that she had won a moral victory
Modifier issue. "Having forfeited her severance package in order to keep the rights to her intellectual property" modifies -->It : Wrong.

(B) she believed that she had won a moral victory
Too many she :) Who is She ?? not Clear. --> Wrong.

(C) the employee believed that she had won a moral victory
"Having forfeited her severance package in order to keep the rights to her intellectual property" modifies --> Employee
"She" refer to Employee. Looks better.

(D) the employee believed her moral victory to have been won
Her ? who dindn't get the link between Her and Employee --> Wrong.
"to have been " change in tense / meaning as well.

(E) the employee believed that the moral victory was won

Twist the meaning and no information who won the moral victory. --> Wrong

So I bet for C.

OA please.

Please correct me if i got this wrong.

(B) she believed that she had won a moral victory

(C) the employee believed that she had won a moral victory

(D) the employee believed her moral victory to have been won

(E) the employee believed that the moral victory was won

KAPLAN OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

The initial sentence is not only wordy and passive but it also misuses modifiers. Since the initial, nonunderlined portion of the sentence modifies the employee, the employee needs to begin the underlined portion of the sentence. Eliminate (A), and you can take out (B) as well because, while it gives you a subject, it creates a pronoun error: nowhere in this sentence do we learn who she or her refers to. Of the remaining choices, (E) is grammatically incorrect because was is the wrong tense. Since the modifier begins with Having, the verb needs to be had been. Or, eliminate (E) and (D) because they include passive constructions while (C) is active and otherwise grammatically correct. (C) wins.

I choose B since it was clear to me that she referred to the person who forfeited the severance.
Also, she believed that she had won a moral victory makes more sense than the employee believed that she had won.
Is it so bad that she cannot believe that she won something?
Not a perfect question imo.

Re: Having forfeited her severance package in order to keep the rights to [#permalink]
sasyaharry,

in B we have only pronouns without any noun to play the role of their antecedent (actually, as what official explanation states).
I do not know whether real GMAT example will test this concept strictly, but when we have better options with the antecedent, such options definitely win.

In many questions, I saw so far it is quite common that a correct choice avoids pronoun at all.

I corrected this sentence in my head without reading the answers.

B is wrong because who is "she''. It takes the context out.
D no reason to use have been
E no reason to use was won
