Hi guys!
I was accepted into the MBA program at HEC Paris.
I want to change sectors and find a consulting job, particularly in the luxury/consumer goods/retail sectors. I am considering working in Europe (Switzerland, Luxembourg, London, Amsterdam, and Nordic countries), and the ME. HEC provides the opportunity to specialize in strategic marketing, get a certificate in luxury and retail, and they also have dual degree programs with NYU/Yale. The opportunity to complete 2 internships (4 months each) is also a great chance for me, given my work experience of just under 3 years. However, I don’t know French, which rules out working in the main market of HEC (I plan to start learning it intensively). And I don't hold an EU passport.
I know that INSEAD is a consulting machine for the MBB. However, I am confused by the short period of the program, the presence of only one internship lasting 2 months, and the lack of double diplomas and specializations.
Is it difficult to find a job in consulting in the sector and countries I am interested in after completing the HEC MBA? Will I be able to compete with INSEAD graduates? Or should I wait and apply for their program instead?
Vikysha7217 there have been many threads previously on this forum where people have asked to compare the two schools so you can also do some back research but to put it simply for you both schools are phenomenal in their respects. You need to really find out which is better for you. It would have been great to know a bit about your background - your nationality, pre-MBA work experience, any exceptional global exposure etc.
There is a general misconception about the "real" market out of INSEAD and HEC Paris. Both schools are located in France and those who can learn conversational French and negotiate employment with French recruiters have been able to find work in France at both the schools. But for most non-locals, they indeed have to seek opportunities in other areas in the EU/UK. Therefore the idea that France is the primary job market for HEC is not entirely true.
Now if you have prior experience in retail, you may be able to get to your target recruiters through either school. But if that is not the case, HEC Paris can give you the right kind of sector focus with internships. However, this was specially a tough year even at HEC Paris for folks targeting retail giants. Getting the right referrals for getting that interview is important (I am not talking about Amazon and other online retail companies). Find out where have the leaders in your target companies done their MBAs. With INSEAD, you will get a great alumni network that will get you the interview but I would say that you have to (kind of) come prepared to the class having done your homework on the right recruitment startegy before. Please note that the NYU exchange at HEC is very competitive, but both the exchange programs in the current market may not provide you very strong options in terms of a job search in the USA.
If you currently have the HEC admit in hand, it would be a big risk to let go of it and aim for INSEAD. I am happy to evaluate your profile for INSEAD but a bird in hand is worth two in the bush.
Best wishes
