Hi Nick!!

Well Companies like S&P global do offer such roles.. you can also target stock exchanges.. and at the end of the it makes sense to do mba because u want to use ur expertise and passion to transition into fintech and that’s the reason for you choosing to do an mba.. isn’t that a circular explanation!!

It’s just my thought. But you know better about yourself.

Hit that kudos if I made any sense to you !

Dear kind members of gmatclub,

I hope you're having a bright week.

I am considering applying to B-Schools for my MBA in R1 for August 2023 intake.

I'm a 27 year old male from India and have a 770 GMAT. I worked as a software engineer for 4 years and then pivoted to product management in the past 1 year. I am also an active derivatives trader with a CAGR of around 40% in the last 3 years. I am also managing a portfolio worth $400,000 for friends and family. I created a software to automate trading for personal use.

I want to combine my passions for tech and trading to create an investment and trading company for retail investors in the long run. However, in the short term, I want to gain more exposure in the finance and investments space, but not sure what roles would suit my long term goal and my profile. I would really appreciate your help on this. What post-MBA roles would you recommend for me?

Hi nickjay,

Thanks for writing in.

Switching to the Fintech domain in the short-term would make a lot of sense especially because the need for MBA then fits in seamlessly. You do not need to be very specific about the firm and could just talk about a Tech-finance role with a prominent firm. Goals in Core Finance may not be completely feasible at the moment and we would recommend that you avoid them for the time being.

Should you wish to discuss this in greater detail, feel free to get in touch with us.

All the best!

I agree that a role at an early-stage or mature-stage FinTech company could be very fruitful. You want to be careful though that you aren't going to one of those companies simply to copy what they are doing for yourself. Since you are somewhat already in the space, you will want to target a functional experience that will help round out your skillset so you can pursue your long-term career. That might be in business development, sales, marketing, etc. or some role (look online at job postings for examples) that combines several of these disciplines. It could also be a role that is geographically based in a city, state, or country that is important for your eventual company. You could argue the exposure would be culturally and professionally beneficial.

Overall, the idea is that without this short-term goal, it would be significantly harder for you to make that leap to starting your own company.
