Q1 a retailer sells 5 shirts. The first 2 he sells for \$64 and \$39. If the retailer wishes to sell the 5 shirts for an overall average price of over \$50, what must be the minimum average price of the remaining 3 shirts?

A. \$49.00
B. \$49.67
C. \$50.00
D. \$51.33
E. \$55.50

IMO A
For this problem, i looked at it as \$50.01.

(64+39 +3x)/5 = 50.01
103 + 3x = 250.05
3x = 147.05
147.05/3 = 49.00

Q3 When the stock market opened yesterday, the price of a share of stock X was 10 1/2. When the market closed, the price was 11 1/8, of the following, which is closest to the percent, increase in the price of stock X?
A. 5.9%
B. 5.99%
C. 5.89%
D. 5. 95%
E. 5.92%

convert the prices to fractions
10 1/2 = 21/2 = 84/8
11 1/8 = 89/8
89/8 - 84/8 = 5/8
(5/8)/84/8 = 5/84 = 5.95%

Q5. If |d-9| = 2d, then d=
A. -9
B. -3
C. 1
D. 3
E. 9

your taking the absolute value of d-9 so 3-9 =-6 but then is 6

Q1: B

(64+39+3x) / 5 = (<50)
103+3x = (<50)*5 = (<250)
3x = (<250) - 103
3x = (<147)
x = (<147) / 3 = (<49)

The smallest number above 49 will then satisfy the question. (when dealing with a number smaller than or greater than, I wouldn't recommend plugging in a number slightly smaller/greater, since this can lead you to the wrong answer)

On Q3, Q5 I agree on D, D respectively.

Q1: A (or B)
(64+39+3p)/5 > 50
103+3p > 250
3p > 147
p > 49

Looks like the wording of the question is screwed up. Answer is either A or B. I would go with A, since B is not really a minimum.

Q3: D
11.125 - 10.5 = 89/8 - 84/8 = 5/8
(5/8)/(84/8) = 5/84 ~ 5.95%

Q5: D
|d-9| = 2d
d must be positive

If d < 9,
9-d = 2d
d = 3

Or

d > 9
d - 9 = 2d
d = -3 <--- this is undefined
