All Data Insight question: TPA [ Official Guide DI Review 2023-24]
Historian: New York City became an influential art center in the 20th century, as seen, for example, in the influential 1913 Armory Show and the growth of museums. This was due primarily to a combination of New York's large and varied population, its basic resources, and its access to European art trends. The city could never have become an influential art center without the era's increased local wealth, which allowed more people to buy art. However, the changes were principally driven by the diversity of the city's population, including intellectuals and artists from Europe, and a culture that prized energy and creativity, which stimulated the artistic endeavors of many people.

Select for Precondition the statement that the passage most strongly suggests describes a precondition for New York becoming an influential art center. And select for Strengthener the statement that would, if true, most clearly strengthen the support for the historian's explanation of why the city became an influential art center. Make only two selections, one in each column.

Historian:

New York City became an influential art center.
Reason: combination of New York's large and varied population, its basic resources, and its access to European art trends.
Necessary requirement: The city could never have become an influential art center without the era's increased local wealth
Primary reason: the changes were principally driven by the diversity of the city's population, including intellectuals and artists from Europe

So the historian tells us the reason for NY becoming an influential art center, a precondition that was present there and of the combination he mentioned before, the prime reason.

The most important thing here is to understand the question properly:

Precondition - the statement that describes a precondition for New York becoming an influential art center.
Strengthener - the statement that would strengthen the support for the historian's explanation of why the city became an influential art center.

Precondition:
The precondition as we see is the necessary requirement mentioned above. The author says "the city could have never become this without local wealth." So wealth was a precondition. (ANSWER)

Strengthener:
We have to strengthen the support for the historian's explanation of why the city became an influential art center.

What is "historian's explanation of why the city became an influential art center" ?
It is the primary reason. ...diversity of the city's population, including intellectuals and artists from Europe

What will strengthen this as the reason?
The Armory Show and other influential New York shows like it featured many prominent European artists.

Makes sense. The influential shows featured European artists. So it had to do with the diversity of the city's population including artists from Europe. (ANSWER)

Members of the Hudson River School of painters helped promote art in New York.

It doesn't support that diversity of the population including Europeans were the reason. We don't know who were the members of Hudson river school.

Hence select 1 and 4 as answers.

Thank you. I however have a slight problem with it. “ The city could never have become an influential art center without the era's increased local wealth, which allowed more people to buy art. However, the changes were principally driven by the diversity”

The however counters the first reason and decreases its significance - hence shouldn’t it be diversity and not wealth?

In the context of the statements you cited, "however" is used to express a meaning along the lines of "at the same time, though."

So, "however, the changes wee principally driven by diversity," doesn't really "counter" the statement about wealth. Rather, it makes clear that something else, "the diversity" in addition to wealth was also important and was the prinicpal driver of the changes.

All the same, as you asked, why wouldn't "diversity" be the correct answer since the passage says that the changes were "principally driven" by diversity rather than by wealth?

The reason is that the correct answer doesn't have to name the principle, most important, driver of New York's becoming an influential art center.. It has to name a "precondition," something necessary, for New York becoming an influential art center. The only thing the passage says was necessary was "the era's increased local wealth," without which, according to the passage, "the city could never have become an influential art center."

Precondition: New York showed significant economic development leading up to the early 20th century.

The passage states that "the city could never have become an influential art center without the era's increased local wealth." This implies that economic prosperity was a necessary condition for New York to become an art center. Increased wealth allows people to buy and support art, which fosters a thriving art scene.

Strengthener: The Armory Show and other influential New York shows like it featured many prominent European artists.

The historian credits New York's access to European art trends and the influence of European intellectuals and artists as key factors in its development as an art center. If the Armory Show and other influential exhibitions in New York featured many prominent European artists, this would directly support the claim that exposure to European art trends was crucial, thereby strengthening the historian's explanation.

Yeah, this argument is sort of an odd duck, isn't it? It doesn't seem to have a single definitive conclusion the way CR questions do. So let's just take the question at face value.

What would strengthen the support for the idea that artists from Europe were stimulating creativity? Well, if European artists were showing up in influential shows, that certainly would do the trick. (If the European artists weren't on anyone's radar, the historian's argument wouldn't make a ton of sense, right?)

Your big takeaway here: you can't necessarily fit these DI questions into the same buckets you're accustomed to using for CR. (And even with CR questions, you want to be attuned to unusual nuances in the questions.) So read carefully and take the questions at face value.

I hope that helps!

My opinion: The statement should contain information that strengthens the precondition or conclusion, such as data or examples that confirm that economic development does not occur without an increase in wealth.

Precondition: New Y ork showed significant economic development leading up to the early 20th century.

The passage explicitly states that increased local wealth was necessary for New York to become an art center. This economic development would have provided the financial foundation for art to flourish.

Strengthener: The Armory Show and other influential New York shows like it featured many prominent European artists.

This statement directly supports the historian's claim that New York's access to European art trends was crucial to its development as an art center. By showcasing prominent European artists, these shows introduced New York's population to cutting-edge artistic movements and inspired local artists to experiment with new styles.

- Precondition means a necessary condition. The answer lies in [without the era's increased local wealth, which allowed more people to buy art.] - basically, the necessary condition is that New Yorkers must have had tons of $$$. Hence, the correct answer is [New York showed significant economic development leading up to the early 20th century.]
- Strengthener: The answer lies in two parts: [This was due primarily to a combination of New York's large and varied population, its basic resources, and its access to European art trends] and [the changes were principally driven by the diversity of the city's population, including intellectuals and artists from Europe, and a culture that prized energy and creativity, which stimulated the artistic endeavors of many people.] In short, we need evidence to show either of the following things:
1. diversity of population in New York
2. basic resources (do they mean art schools and such?)
3. access to European art (intellectuals, artists, critics, etc.)
4. a culture that promotes art

Let's assess each of the remaining answer choices:
1. New York afforded easy access to major art museums in other cities in the United States. --> we don't care about other cities. We only care about New York. --> wrong

2. Members of the Hudson River School of painters helped promote art in New York. --> is this the same as [a culture that promotes art]? could be, keep

3. The Armory Show and other influential New York shows like it featured many prominent European artists. --> clearly showcase the presence of the European art in the New York scene --> keep

4. The composition of European groups immigrating to New York changed in the early 1900s. --> change? how do they change (increase, decrease)? Are those European immigrants artists, critics, or intellectuals? Because we need an art-related European, not just a random one. --> wrong

Among the two plausible answers, [The Armory Show and other influential New York shows like it featured many prominent European artists.] is clearly stronger, as it explicitly points to the European art theme in the prompt. If in the Hudson River School example, the replace with [the whole New York has a vibrant campaign, program to promote art], or something like that, then we may have a case.
