You can acquire a general MBA from IIM Ahmedabad in two ways:
1. MBA via the CAT-PGP route. 2. MBA via the GRE/GMAT-PGPX route.
The Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (MBA-PGPX) is one of the best 1-year full-time residential programs in the world.
In 2020, the PGPX programs Ranked#61 in Financial Times Global MBA Rankings and Ranked#1 in India by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) (Management Category).
Eligibility:
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent. - Valid GRE/GMAT score. - Minimum 25 years of age before program commencement. - Minimum 4 years of full-time work experience between graduation and program commencement.
My Profile: Applied For: IIMA PGPX Class of 2021–2022. Round 1. Education: Bachelor of Arts (Public Administration), Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (Human Resource)
Work Experience: Indian Air Force (6 Years - Technician) Indian Army (10 Years - Officer)
Motivation to Apply: - Looking for a transition from the Armed Forces to the Corporate world and needed quality education to set my foot confidently in the Corporate environment. - Keeping in mind the COVID environment and the present visa issues in US, I wanted to pursue the best possible education available in the country - Applied to IIM A (Selected), B (Could not make it), C (Selected) and ISB (Interviewed) & just to try myself in Schulich School of Business (selected) also.
Pre-Interview: All interviews for Round 1 were online (Zoom) given the COVID-19 situation. Received a pre-interview zoom link to check for connectivity issues and some due diligence from IIMA admission staff. The link for submitting the essays and resume was provided on 14 Sep and the final submission was on 17 Sep. My advice for this would be that you should not be swept away by the word limit that is given to you and should try to summarise your response so that it can be easily read. (Out of 1000 words that were given to put across your response I used 436 words). Resume - keep it to one page and don't come below a font size of 10, use spaces, and do keep margins. All said and done keep it concise, neat, and readable.
Interview Experience: Time: 11:30 IST | 26 Sep Panel: Two current professors at IIMA. Both teach the PGPX class.
Panelist 1: We will start with the extempore, I will pick a slip for you, and then you would have a few minutes to prepare before you give your stand. If you don't like the topic on the first go, you would have the option for picking up one more slip but then that topic would be binding on you.
Me: Yes sir we can start with the draw.
I received a topic on COVID and I took about 30 sec to prepare and then I delivered my opinion on the issue. We had a discussion on my response and there were few points from the panel which were in contradiction to what I had stated in my response. But as the panel was logical in their statements, so I never actually tried to fight the whites and accepted their point of view by incorporating it in my response.
Advice: Be prepared with what's happening around in the world and society and you would be good to go for the extempore. Take extempore as an icebreaker, they want to see how you think on your foot - but you do need some background knowledge to think on your foot. State your point but be ready to accept criticism also if they give you a logical reason for criticism. They are professors and they have some background knowledge which is much superior to yours - respect that.
Panelist 1: So Manish tell us more about yourself, what do you do, what is your current work profile, why do you want to do an MBA at this juncture?
I had prepared an Elevator Pitch for such a question. Would highly recommend this to everyone as it provides the perfect opportunity to express your reasons and better place your candidature to the panel. Delivered that clearly in around 120 seconds meeting all objectives.
Panelist 2: Why don't you come for our 6 months program that is offered to Armed Forces personnel?
Me: I stated three reasons. One, I won't find the diversity that I would find in a one-year program and hence I would lose on the valuable peer learning. Two, I believe that to understand the whole business functioning 1-year course is more suited than a 6-month course. Third I would not have that credibility that I would have after having that MBA from IIM A on my resume.
Panelist 2: You have mentioned in your application that you want to pursue a career in the field of Operations. What brings this affinity towards this field? I told them about my current job which basically dealt with operations (operations of war), also how I had a good exposure of working on supply chains and infrastructure development while serving in the armed forces, and from there I connected my response as to why Operations as my preferred field.
Panelist 1: As per you while you transition from armed forces to the corporate world which skills that you have will further help you in your job post an MBA? I gave an example of man-management, time-management, and working under a resource-constrained environment and how the experience gained from this would help me to work in any job post an MBA.
Panelist 1: There may be some concerns of the recruiters as to how you would be able to perform in the corporate world with those deeply ingrained qualities that you have developed while working in the military. I replied to make sure that those apprehensions are taken care of and highlighted the various aspects which are common to both working in the corporate world and military affairs.
Both Panelist: Any questions for us? Thanked the panel for taking out the time. (You may choose to ask any question which you could not find an answer to on the website/ webinars/ speaking to alumni)
Tips:
- Be calm.
- Be direct, to the point, yet relevant. Standard MBA questions and answers should be in your mind all the time.
- Research. About the school and program. Talk to alumni. Get an idea about the course from them.
- It’s totally okay to not know something. Tell them. Honesty is always appreciated. You can evade the extempore topic too if you feel you’re not comfortable.
- Be clear as to what you want from the school and what you are bringing to the class.
- Believe in yourself.
Result: Selected!
