Hi

For a score of 730, how many questions need to be answered correctly in quant and verbal?
Does anyone have a break up for scores based on number of mistakes?

All help appreciated! Kudos to helpful answers! :)

The test is computer adaptive which means you can have 10 wrong and score 99 percentile or 95 percentile ie it depends upon the difficulty of questions done corect or wrong if the easy question is flunked penalty is heigher.

While there is no right or wrong answer to your question, the following thread might be of help:

It is impossible to answer. GMAT score does not depend on the number of mistakes you make. It is the same as asking how many goals should one score to win the semi finals of the World Cup. The answer is - it depends on how many the other team scores.

It is similar on the GMAT- you score depends on the number of hard questions you answer correctly.

Hi akshita957,

In another post, you stated that you took the official GMAT and scored 680/Q37/V47. If you are consistently scoring at such a high level in the Verbal section, then raising this 680 to a 730+ is absolutely doable. Before we discuss how best to continue with your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) How have you scored on EACH of your CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
5) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

Hi akshita957,

I’m glad you reached out, and I’m happy to help. To reiterate, your GMAT score is based on not only the number of questions you answer correct/incorrect, but also the difficulty of those questions, among other things. Rather than spending time worrying about the GMAC algorithm, you really should focus on the things you can control, and the number one thing you can control is getting better at the GMAT. If you reach a point at which you can dominate the GMAT, the specifics of the scoring algorithm won't matter because you will have the skills you need to get an amazing score, right?

With that said, when is your GMAT? Have you taken any practice exams to get a baseline score?

You may find it helpful to read this article about
how to score a 700+ on the GMAT.

If you have any further questions, please reach out.

Good luck!

The other replies in the thread have covered the practical answer to your question (which is: there's no way to say, because the GMAT doesn't really count how many you get right/wrong.)

However, if anyone is curious, I have a little data from score reports.

- You'd probably get about a 720 if you got a 40 on Verbal and a 48 on Quant, which is a pretty reasonable breakdown for people scoring in this range.

- In my score reports, people scoring around a 40 on Verbal got anywhere from 67% to 80% of the questions right. (However, getting that many questions right doesn't guarantee you a 40. For instance, one student got 74% of the Verbal questions right overall and scored a 28.)

- People scoring around a 48 on Quant got anywhere from 64% to 82% of the questions right. (Again, getting that many questions right doesn't guarantee you a 48. For instance, one student got 75% of the Quant questions right and scored a 38.)

The point of this isn't to give you a target to aim for, because getting a certain number of questions right does not guarantee a certain score. In fact, it doesn't even make it too much more likely that you'll get that score. The point is to drive home what everyone already said - that there's not a very strong correlation, and you're better off focusing on performing consistently and getting through the whole test section within the time limit.
