So I'm a foreign student studying in Australia. On my first try I used my driver licence (which i didn't know its not valid), they accepted my id and i did my exam. This led me to believe that driver licence is an acceptable form of id for the test. However, i did not receive the score that I wanted and so I tried again, only this time they told me that it actually wouldn't work and wouldn't allow me to take the exam. Later I emailed them, told them exactly what happened, that I received misleading info from the test center, and I wanted a refund or at least a reschedule, and they just tell me that it was all my fault and refused to give me back my money or any other assistance.

As per GMAC policy, it is mandatory to carry a valid passport and it is the only accepted document as verification ID.
Apparently if you are appearing in GMAT in a country outside your country of citizenship, passport is the only valid id-proof.
While registering for GMAT, you must have (obviously) registered as a non-Australian citizen and hence the reason for their insistence on your passport.
So, I would say your first attempt was actually a violation of the rules.
