Hello,
In the CR 700 level questions, I am unable to decode the answer choices whereas I am performing fine on the lower difficulty questions.
Can someone please help? Much appreciated.
Thanks!
Critical Reasoning can be divided into 5, although I divide into 4: (1) Strengthening (2) Weakening (3) Inference (4) Method of Reasoning, and sometimes
(5) Explain- Resolve the paradox (I count it in strengthening method though some not)
In Strengthening and weakening questions, make sure you get the conclusion correct. Its not necessary that conclusion is the last sentence always.
Then, rephrase the what lead to the conclusion, but make sure you are literal about the argument and use the authors language only and not put your words. In the conclusion, make sure you are not distracted by other answer choices, as GMAT will try to put the words in the wring answer which sometimes be strengthening or weakening the premise.
E.g. Apples reduce blood pressure, therefore apples are good for health.
Now, to strengthen this argument, we first need to find the conclusion which is, "apples are good for health".
Here pre thinking comes
Why, because "apples reduce blood pressure".
Now try to weaken the conclusion in order to strengthen; this is counter to what we meant but try it.
Lets follow the above line, so just because apples reduces the pressure, it doesn't mean that they are good for health. There might be other things which are deterrent to the body which may overshadow the reduced "overall health benefits". Remember we are talking about the overall health, pre thinking lays the roadmap for for what we need to find, and focus on the conclusion without being distracted.
In inference questions, try with the the process of elimination even more than you in strengthening and weakening. Read the argument thoroughly, and don't just to the conclusion, answer could be in the premise too. Read each argument carefully.
In conclusion, try to select an option which captures the entire idea of the argument not just which covers the last sentence.
You should try the LSAT questions, they are very high level questions.
On youtube, search "The Tested tutor critical reasoning" for assumption and further on strengthening.
