Hi Harambe112.

From what I've seen of how people have been scoring, 675 is probably not really equivalent to 730 on the previous GMAT.

For applying to HSW or M7 schools, 675 is probably more like the previous 700, or maybe 710.

685+ may be the range you want to be in for those schools, and 695, or possibly even 705, may be the new 730.

Interesting!
So you feel GMAC will have to update their percentile table pretty soon?

There’s a lot more than just the score that goes into consideration for admission. You can check the link in my signature for what are my chances to to get a sense of the detail, make sure to click on the advanced options.

Usually the competitive score for M7 is considered 99th percentile. you can have lower if you have a very interesting unique background. There have been people with 680s and 690s getting into Harvard but if you come from an engineering background in Southeast Asia, 99% is going to be your averages

Thanks for the reply.

As per sources GMAT avg & median score for Stanford is 733 for last year. Which is 96%ile.

Is there something I am missing? There can't be that many people with "unique background/experiences".

The score is not what gets you in at Harvard and Stanford. We had a person a few years ago who got admitted to Stanford with a 680 and she applied in round three, the worst round we are only about 10% of the class are recruited. As someone who went to HBS summarized, if your biggest accomplishment in life will be getting into HBS, you likely won’t get in. Harvard does not make great people, it admits them.

I would poke around the decision tracker and check the profiles of people who are graduating from Stanford on LinkedIn.

Stanford has a 5% or 6% admission rate. They can be pretty picky about who they admit.

Yet again, a 680 can be good enough to get in. It is the whole package that matters but for mere mortals and India engineers, the “average” for even top 10 has been 750 on the old scale just because there is so much competition for a limited segment of the class.

I hope you don't mind me chiming in here, but as someone who is primarily a part of the Indian GMAT-taking community, I have a strong feeling that the percentiles may undergo some changes soon.

Indian students typically excel in the Quant section. With the DI section contributing linearly to the final score alongside Verbal and Quant, those proficient in Quant have a notable advantage currently. Moreover, the DI section often includes 7-8 Data Sufficiency questions, both math and non-math-based, which cater to the strengths of individuals adept in Quant. Additionally, the questions related to TPA (Two-Part Analysis), Graphs, and Tables largely resemble Quant-based queries.

Considering these factors, I anticipate a shift in the percentiles, potentially resulting in the previous 700 scores being equivalent to around 675, as hinted by MartyMurray.

It's always insightful to discuss these trends and potential changes within the GMAT community. Thanks for bringing up this point, and I look forward to hearing others' thoughts on this matter.

I think they updated it once already. I'm pretty sure that, originally, they were saying that 705 would be equivalent to 760, but now the lowest score that's equivalent to 760 is 715.

Also, some people told me that the percentiles on their official score reports were lower than the percentiles they saw for their scores on test day.

So, it appears that GMAC shifted the percentiles downward.

Will GMAC shift them down again soon? I'm not sure, but given what I've seen of how people have been scoring, I wouldn't be surprised if we see another shift down in July, after the current testing year ends in June.

To be precise - is this enough to apply to Ivy Leagues - Harvard/Stanford/etc.
Hi Harambe112,

A 675 is currently similar to a score of 720-730. As mentioned in the other replies, percentiles may change (the updated tables will be released in Q3), but we don't know whether they will, or how much. For what it's worth, I think it's reasonable to expect some shifts, but it's all speculation at this point. No one has good data on this apart from GMAC.

Also, Rajat and Payal from eGMAT had reached out to GMAC on this issue. You could consider tagging them or sending them a DM.

I think we should compare percentiles and leave it be, as it is the only official communication from GMAC that links the two scores. Also, I have a slight bias against GMAT Tutors claiming that 675 is the new 700, for obvious reasons.
