The total trade deficit should be 15 instead of 20 since trade deficit is not equal to imports but rather exports-imports. Kindly explain.
You’re right: the trade deficit is not equal to total imports but rather imports minus exports. In this case, imports are about 20.8 and exports are about 5.2, so the deficit is 20.8 - 5.2 = 15.6. That 15.6 is the actual deficit. To close it, exports would need to rise from 5.2 up to 20.8. Since 20.8/5.2 ≈ 4, exports would have to be increased about four times.

Hi , I also went through the reply of yours to understand 3 times and 4 times more debate, but what I felt after reading all those is as the term "increases" is used the answer should be 3 times more. Because lets say you want to make 10$ as 20$ you would say there is a 100% increase not 200% increase in the amount. Similarly here there is 3 times increase not 4 time, Please clarify the same.

I tired explaining this on the previous page. I'll try again: here, exports must become 4 times the original (20.8/5.2 = 4). So it’s “increase four times,” not “increase three times,” because the final value is 4 times as large, not 3 times more.
