In a certain game, the units of currency of 3 countries are the crown, shield and the pound, respectively. If 2 crowns equal 3 shields and 3 shields equal 4 pounds, how many crowns equal 18 pounds?

a) 9
b) 16
c) 18
d) 32
e) 36

Difficulty: Low

let c = crown; s=shield; AND p=pound;

2c=3s=4p

2c=4p

9c=18p

9 crowns = 18 punds

Hence option A = 9 is the answer.

The ratio is pretty simple here:
C : S : P --> 2 : 3 : 4

The question is, how many C's will equal 18p's. First find out how many P's are needed to get 18 based on our ratio:
18 / 4 = 4.5 --> this is going to be our multiple.

The ratio now is going to look like this:
2(x) : 4(x) --> 2(4.5) : 4(4.5) --> 9 : 18.

The answer is 9 or A

Solution

Let us write crown as C, shield as S and pound as P.

Given:

    • 2C= 3S
    • 3S= 4P

To find:

    • We need to how many crowns equal 18P.

Approach and Working:

    • 2C= 3S
    • 3S= 4P
      o 2C= 4P or C= 2P
      o Multiplying by 9, we get: 9C= 18 P

Hence, the correct answer is option A.

Answer: A

A 2 crowns are equal to 4 pounds (double the value), then 18 pounds will equal be 18/2 crowns. Thus, 9.

This problem is most easily solved by using ratios. Here's an explanation on YouTube:
