If p & q are negative integers, is p>q?
(1) p < 2q - 3
(2) q > 3p - 2
(1) p < 2q - 3
(2) q > 3p - 2
If q is a negative integer, then 2q will always be smaller than q. If we subtract 3 from an integer, that will decrease its value. So if q < 0, this is true:
2q - 3 < 2q < q
and if Statement 1 is true, then p < 2q - 3 < 2q < q, so we know p < q, and we can answer the question (the answer is "no, p is not greater than q").
Similarly, for Statement 2, 3p - 2 will be smaller than p if p is negative. So we learn q is greater than something that is smaller than p. That doesn't tell us if q is greater than p, so Statement 2 won't be sufficient. You could see that by generating examples: if p = -2, then Statement 2 says "q > -8". So q might be -5, and might be less than -2, or q might be -1 and might be greater than -2. So the answer is A.

Question: is p>q?
Statement 1: p < 2q - 3
for negative values of q, 2q < q
and since p < 2q therefore, p is definitely less than q
SUFFICIENT
Statement 2: q > 3p - 2
for p = -3, q > -11 i.e. q may be -10 which is less than p or -2 which is greater than p hence
NOT SUFFICIENT
Answer: Option A
