What is the difference between A and D. I marked D.

"Farther" is used when we want to indicate a literal distance, whereas "further" is used to mean 'more'. However in this sentence, the athletes progressing in their recovery is a figurative speech and for that reason, using "farther" will not make sense. Therefore 'D' is incorrect and 'A' is correct.
