A. -9
B. -5
C. -3
D. -1
E. 5

x^2 – 4x = 5
Rearrange to get: x^2 – 4x - 5 = 0
Factor: (x - 5)(x + 1) = 0
So, either x = 5 or x = -1

If x = 5, then x - 4 = 5 - 4 = 1 [not among the answer choices]
If x = -1, then x - 4 = (-1) - 4 = -5. Great!

Answer: B

x^2 – 4x = 5

i.e. x^2 – 4x - 5 = 0

i.e. x^2 – 5x + x - 5 = 0

i.e. (x-5)(x+1) = 0
i.e. x = 5 or -1

i.e. x-4 = 5-4 or -1-4

i.e. x-4 = 1 or -5

Answer: Option B

x^2 - 4x -5 = 0
x^2 - 5x + 1x - 5 = 0
x(x-5) + 1(x-5) = 0
(x-5)(x+1)=0
x = 5
or x = -1

Therefore,
x-4 = 5-4 = 1
or x-4 = -1-4 = -5
Since only -5 is in the options, it is the correct answer
