X can anlso be equal to -2

as $$x^2 = 4 = 2^2 = (-2)^2$$

E should be the correct answer.

Given$$x^2=w+y$$

Question stem: x=?

St1:- w+y=4
So, $$x^2=4$$ Or, x=+2 or -2
Since x has more than one value, hence insufficient.

St2:-y = 1, no information on w , hence the value of x can't be determined.
Insufficient.

(1)+(2), same scenario, two values of x. Hence insufficient.

Ans. E

Solution

Given:
• $$x^2 – y = w$$

To find:
• The value of x

Analysing Statement 1
“w + y = 4”
• $$x^2 – y = w$$ => $$x^2 = w + y$$
o Implies, $$x^2 = 4$$
o Thus, x is equal to ±2
• However, we cannot find a unique value of x

Therefore, Statement (1) ALONE is not sufficient to answer this question

Analysing Statement 2
“y = 1”
• Substituting this in the equation, $$x^2 – y = w$$
o $$x^2 = w + 1$$
• We cannot find the value of x, as we don’t have any information about w

Therefore, Statement (2) ALONE is not sufficient to answer this question

Combining Both Statements
• Combining both the statements, we get
o y = 1, w = 3 and x = ±2
• However, we cannot find a unique value of x

Thus, Statement (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient

Hence, the correct answer is option E.
