Given from the options a has to be single digit no., hence a +b =17 could be 9,8 or 8,9

now a/3 -b/4

a cant be 9 , otherwise a would be divisible by 3.
therefore, a=8.

we know 0.166666... is 1/6 and 0.016666... is 1/60. and 0.4 can be written as 2/5.

So 0.416.... cab ne written as 1/60 + 2/5 the canculation ahead is easy as 12 is a factor of 60

In a decimal, a bar over a digit indicates that the digit repeats indefinitely. If a and b are integers, \(a/3 - b/4 = 0.41\overline{6}\) and \(a + b = 17\), what is the value of \(a\)?

(A) 5
(B) 7
(C) 8
(D) 9
(E) 10
I could think of a slightly unconventional approach.

since any number divided by a power of 2 (2, 4, 8 etc ) can be a recurring decimal, a/3 must have had the recurring 6 already.

Check for numbers that leave a recurring 6 in the decimal places

a. 5/3 = 1.6666
Means that b = 4 * (1.66666 - 0.416666) = 1.25 *4 = 5
a + b = 10, so wrong!

b. 7/3 = 2.333333 - skip

c. 8/3 = 2.66666

means that b = 4 * (2.66666 - 0.4166666) = 2.25*4 = 9
8 + 9 = 17, hence our answer
