There are 5 paths from point A to point B, and 8 paths from point B to point C. In how many different ways can the player accomplish this task?

There are
i) A-->B : 5 ways to choose from
ii) B-->C : 8 ways to choose from
iii) C--> B : 8-1=7 ways to choose from
iv) B--> A : 5-1=4 ways to choose from
Therefore, by multiplication rule, 5*8*7*4=1120 different ways.
I used the multiplication rule because each way is distinct and the order matters.
There are
i) A-->B : 5 ways to choose from

iii) C--> B : 8-1=7 ways to choose from
iv) B--> A : 5-1=4 ways to choose from
