OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

In order to do well on the GMAT, one needs to learn not only math and English, but also the test writers' way of thinking.

A. needs to learn not only math and English, but also the test writers' way of thinking

This answer choice correctly uses the phrase not only A but also B. A and B, which are both nouns (math and English and the test writers' way of thinking, respectively), parallel each other both logically and grammatically.

B. not only needs to learn math and English, but also the test writers' way of thinking

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The same part of speech that follows not only should follow but also. Not only is followed by a verb (needs) whereas but also is followed by a noun (the test writer's way of thinking).

What helps us identify this question as a Parallelism question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:

    not only... but also...

C. needs not only to learn math and English, but also the test writers' way of thinking

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The same part of speech that follows not only should follow but also. Not only is followed by a verb (to learn) whereas but also is followed by a noun (the test writer's way of thinking).

What helps us identify this question as a Parallelism question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:

    not only... but also...

D. needs to learn not only math and English, but also learn the way of thinking of the test writer

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The same part of speech that follows not only should follow but also. Not only is followed by a noun (math and English) whereas but also is followed by a verb (learn).

What helps us identify this question as a Parallelism question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:

    not only... but also...

Also, this answer choice is stylistically flawed as a result of replacing the phrase the test writers' way of thinking with the longer, awkward phrase the way of thinking of the test writers.

E. needs to learn not only math and English, but also learn the test writers' way of thinking

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The same part of speech that follows not only should follow but also. Not only is followed by a noun (math and English) whereas but also is followed by a verb (learn).

What helps us identify this question as a Parallelism question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:

    not only... but also...
