In Semanta, there are 52 major businesses: 10 in the manufacturing sector, 24 in the service industry, and 18 start-ups. All the manufacturing businesses have been in operation since before 1970. All the start-ups and a third of the service-oriented businesses were founded after the year 2000.

Of businesses not in the downtown sector, approximate % are start-ups.

Assume that any business founded after 2000 had a website from its start, and that any business founded with a website before that added a website after it had already been in operation. These latter companies constitute % of companies with a website.

1st :
Of businesses not in the downtown sector, approximate___________ % are start-ups.
Total businesses in downtown sector = 22 (10 startup, 7 manf. , 5 service)
% startup = 10/22*100 = 5*100/11 = 45.45 %

2nd:

Assume that any business founded after 2000 had a website from its start ==> All startups + 1/3 of Service = 18 + (1/3)*24 =

and that any business founded with a website before that added a website after it had already been in operation;
a) Composition of industries with websites = 1 (Manf.) + 13 (Service) + 18 startups = 32
b) All startups (18 nos.) and 8 no.s of Service Industries were founded after 2000 i.e. total 26, industries incorporating websites post-2000 are = 32-26 = 6

Therefore, the percentage of the latter = 6/32*100 = 3/16*100 = 18.75 %

­Detailing from where this "5" came from:

"a third of the service-oriented businesses were founded after the year 2000"(1/3*24 = 8) + "Assume that any business founded after 2000 had a website from its start" => "8 service-oriented businesses had a website from its start"
From the chart 13 service-oriented business has a website
So, 13-8=5 service-oriented business didn't have a website from its started and added it after already been in operation.

52 business: 
  • 10 manufacturing: all started before 1970
  • 24 service
    •  8 started after 2000
  • 18 startups: all started after 2000

1. ­Of businesses not in the downtown sector, approximate [__] % are start-ups.

Those not in downtown sector inlude
  • 5 service (triangles) 
  • 7 (= 1 + 6) manufacturing (squares)
  • 10 startups (circles) 
=> Total: 22
% startups = \(\frac{10}{22}\) = 45.4%

2. Assume that any business founded after 2000 had a website from its start, and that any business founded with a website before that added a website after it had already been in operation. These latter companies constitute [__] % of companies with a website.

Those adding a website after it had already been in operation => Founded before 2000

The number of businesses having a website
  • 13 service (triangles)
    • 8 founded after 2000 (because all started after 2000 had a website)
  • 1 manufacturing (square)
  • 18 startups (circles): all started after 2000 and had a website
=> Total: 32

Number of those founded after 2000 (& had a website): 26 = 18 + 8
Number of those founded before 2000 (& had a website): 6 = 32 - 16

% founded before 2000: \(\frac{6}{32}\) = 18.75%
