In the admissions process, universities have begun to focus more and more on recommendations from teachers and personal statements from students, in part that their student body should acquire diversity and partly because recommendations provide more personal appraisals of students' abilities.

a) in part that their student body should acquire diversity
b) in part for the acquisition of diversity in their student body
c) partly because of their student body acquiring diversity
d) partly because diversity should be acquired by their student body
e) partly to acquire diversity in their student body

Similar OG question: LINK

Hey Guys,

Please explain the parallelism in this question. For me the correct parallel construction would be "partly because X... and partly because Y" i.e. because after partly in both parts of the sentence. However that does not seem to be the case.

Can someone please explain.

Thanks.

I encountered similar question from OG and this is one such question where we make mistake in meaning to maintain parallelism .
A and B are out because we need partly to maintain parallelism
C is out because it is wrong as it is fragment .
D is also wrong
E is correct

Now Just look at D

Should in GMAT moral obligation it does not mean that it has to be followed for example
The doctor advised Jon , who had an accident a month ago , that he should take physiotherapy for 3 months .
Here the advice is just a moral obligation and Jon is not mandated to take physiotherapy sessions.
He may or may not take take physiotherapy sessions .

E on the other hand is little off with respect to parallelism but the meaning is very clear
Infinitive of purpose is used and therefore E is superior to D

Hope it all made sense :-)

In the admissions process, universities have begun to focus more and more on recommendations from teachers and personal statements from students, in part that their student body should acquire diversity and partly because recommendations provide more personal appraisals of students' abilities.

(A) in part that their student body should acquire diversity "in part" is not parallel with "partly" that follows. Eliminate.

(B) in part for the acquisition of diversity in their student body "in part" is not parallel with "partly" that follows. Eliminate.

(C) partly because of their student body acquiring diversity This brings a shift in meaning - this implies that the student body acquiring diversity is what has caused universities to focus more on recommendations and personal statements, while the original sentence clearly wants to make the opposite causality. Eliminate.

(D) partly because diversity should be acquired by their student body This unnecessarily brings in passive voice for the acquisition of diversity. Eliminate.

(E) partly to acquire diversity in their student body Correct.

Hope this helps.
