Product - singular, therefore boxes should be singular. D E are out.
The disposable is correct, eliminate C.
Where is for places, A seems best imo

B,C,E are out at first glance.

Between A and D IMO, we have to use IN WHICH rather than INSIDE WHICH.

A lot of you have eliminated D for incorrect reasons

D is incorrect because you can't package PRODUCT in boxes, you can package A product in A box or PRODUCTS in BOXES but not PRODUCT IN BOXES

In the face of widespread concern about environmental waste, compact disc manufacturers are attempting to find a replacement for the disposable plastic box in which they package their product.

(A) the disposable plastic box in which they
(B) the disposable plastic box where they
(C) a disposable plastic box in which to
(D) disposable plastic boxes inside which they
(E) the disposable plastic boxes in which to

Correct answer: A

A: Correct
B: "where they package" suggests that the packaging occurs inside the disposable plastic box
C: "To package their product" suggests that the replacement is for a generic "disposable plastic box" rather than, as the original sentence states, the box in which the manufacturer packages the product.
D: The plural "disposable plastic boxes" does not match with singular "product."
E: The plural "disposable plastic boxes" as in D, and "in which to package their product" as in C.

which one out of the three is correct or all three are correct?
The disposable , a disposable and disposable.
I thought the placement of article as a split.

In the face of widespread concern about environmental waste, compact disc manufacturers are attempting to find a replacement for the disposable plastic box in which they package their product.

(A) the disposable plastic box in which they

Correct.

(B) the disposable plastic box where they

"where" is only used when it refers to an actual place/area. In addition, "in which", if appeared in the answer choices, is usually better than "where" when leading a clause.

(C) a disposable plastic box in which to

look at the explanation below.

(D) disposable plastic boxes inside which they

There is no such idiom as "inside which".

(E) the disposable plastic boxes in which to

look at the explanation below.

Remember: particular reference (the + noun) vs. general reference (plural noun or a/an + singular).

Here, a particular reference should be used because "a replacement" is designed for something specific.

C: a disposable plastic box ---> general reference wrong!

D: disposable plastic boxes ---> general reference wrong!

E: the disposable plastic boxes ---> particular reference. also wrong! why???

Even though E has particular reference, it sounds like it is referring to boxes that are produced within a specific timeframe or with a specific lot number etc. And it actually shrinks the range the "box" refers to, whereas in A, "the disposable plastic box" refers to a box that is being used by the entire "compact disc" industry. In the words of mathematics: <the boxes> ⊂ <the box>.

It might be hard to understand, but you can always eliminate these answer by idioms of "which".

Unofficial question and so, not much learning can be accrued from this. Nevertheless, this post provides some clue.

The source tag is GMAT Paper Test.

I did go through the post but I wasn't satisfied with the explanation. It says that "product" is singular and hence we cannot package "a product" in "the boxes". Let's say company X manufactures only 1 product line (shoes). Now it can package its product in boxes

E.g. The product is amazing and is packed in red boxes.

Hi! Why "where" is wrong?? I read the explanations mentioning that "where" is used for places *but* "disposable plastic box" is a place where you put the disc!
In general, I'm having problems with "where" and even though I checked the forum for more info about its usage, I tend to find the explanation that "where" is used for places/areas. Could someone help me to understand better when to use "where" please!!

Thanks in advance!

KarishmaB Ma'am,
Please share your reasoning for D and E.

They are trying to find a replacement for the plastic box. - Correct
They are trying to find a replacement for the plastic boxes. - So will all CDs go into one replacement package? A bit ambiguous so options (A) and (B) are better.

We know that they are trying to find replacement for that specific plastic box in which they package the CD. So use of 'a disposable plastic box' in option (C) is not correct.

"inside which" in option (D) gives the impression that the action of packaging takes place inside the box! Actually they package by putting the CD in the box.

The use of "in which to" in options (C) and (D) is incorrect because it seems that they intend to package the product in the disposable plastic box. But what they want is to find a replacement to the disposable plastic box in which they package the product currently.
