In the figure above, JKL is a right triangle. What is the area of triangle JKL ?

(1) The length of JK is 3.
(2) The length of KL is 6.

Figure not drawn to scale, angle details are not given it could be 30-60-90 or 45-45-90

only option left of calculating area is by finding dimensions of all sides using both information.. option C

GMATinsight : how is answer E??

I also made the same mistake but now I realize that I assumed that right angle is at point K whereas the right angle can be at point J as well as figure should not be assumed drawn to scale

therefore Answer Option E seems correct.

I disagree here.
Your explanation could be accepted if figure was not shown. I don't think GMAT plays these kind of tricks.

To calculate area of the right triangle we need the length of any two sides of triangle or one more angle and 1 side

Statements alone don't give us sufficient information because figure is not assumed to brawn to scale hence right angle may be at point K or at point J hence NOT SUFFICIENT

Answer: Option E

Isn't it mentioned in the instructions provided by GMAT before Quant section begins that - "Exceptions will be clearly noted"?? Just to match your answer with the OA I think you've brought in this logic that right angle can be at any point!!

Most funniest and illogical question i have ever encountered in GMAT preparation.
If they have not given figure then only 'E' makes sense , they have given figure , so now they just want to match their answer by giving illogical explanation.

Again guys, this question will not appear in the actualy exam. If they really draw a diagram like this they have to put a right angle mark somewhere.

This question was made to remind you that you cannot assume any angle be right angle unless they explicitely tell you. But I am confident to say that this diagram without right angle mark cannot appear in the real exam, they just won't trick you this way.
