Error Analysis: Fertilization is singular.

Elimination Step 1: "was" should be starting word. So eliminating A and C.

Elimination Step 2: "are" in the second sentence is not allowed, as fertilization is singular. So eliminating B.

Elimination Step 3: We are left with options D and E.

D) was first successfully used in 1978 and is now commonly practiced now in cases of infertility and gestational surrogacy, despite being

E) was first successfully used in 1978 and commonly practiced now in cases of infertility and gestational surrogacy, even though they are
The second part should be in present tense ("now"). But due to parallelism, it can be past tense ("was").

Correct Answer: D

Project SC Butler: Day 49 Sentence Correction (SC2)

In vitro fertilization, a type of assisted reproductive technology in which eggs are removed from the woman’s ovaries, fertilized in a laboratory, and then implanted into a surrogate’s uterus, were first successfully used in 1978 and are commonly practiced now in cases of infertility and gestational surrogacy, despite being banned as well as restricted in several countries.

A) were first successfully used in 1978 and are commonly practiced now in cases of infertility and gestational surrogacy, despite being
B) was first successfully used in 1978 and are now commonly practiced in cases of infertility and gestational surrogacy, despite being
C) were first successfully used in 1978 and are now commonly practiced in cases of infertility and gestational surrogacy, even though they are
D) was first successfully used in 1978 and is commonly practiced now in cases of infertility and gestational surrogacy, despite being
E) was first successfully used in 1978 and commonly practiced now in cases of infertility and gestational surrogacy, even though they are

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

"Being" is not wrong ALL of the time on the GMAT.

The answer comes down to subject verb agreement, really.

But suppose you have no idea whether in vitro fertilization is singular or plural?

Think of similar words. The ending --ATION is fairly common in English.
Meditation. Adoration. Multiplication. We add S's to those words to pluralize them.

Split #1 - Singular: In vitro fertilization. . . WAS, not were

Eliminate A and C

Split #2 - Singular: In vitro fertilization was . . . and IS commonly now practiced, not are commonly

Eliminate B

[color=#Split #3 - Singular: In vitro fertilization . . . . even though IT IS, not they are.

Eliminate E

The answer is D.

deushyant , welcome.

I posted on Christmas. Everyone has the right answer.
Smiley faces to everyone except Yash312 , who gets kudos for best answer. :)

deushyant , well, I am glad to hear that you are not sure,
because two instances of now are erroneous.
You caught my typo. :)
Thank you. +1 Edited.

A) were first successfully used in 1978 and are commonly practiced now in cases of infertility and gestational surrogacy, despite being - Subject-verb agreement - IVR needs singular "was" and "is"

B) was first successfully used in 1978 and are now commonly practiced in cases of infertility and gestational surrogacy, despite being - Subject-verb agreement - IVR needs singular "is'

C) were first successfully used in 1978 and are now commonly practiced in cases of infertility and gestational surrogacy, even though they are - Subject-verb agreement - IVR needs singular "was" and "is"

D) was first successfully used in 1978 and is commonly practiced now in cases of infertility and gestational surrogacy, despite being - Correct

E) was first successfully used in 1978 and commonly practiced now in cases of infertility and gestational surrogacy, even though they are - "was commonly practiced now" is illogical
"they are" is incorrect as we need "it is" for singular IVF;

is now commonly practiced now has to be redundant... There must be a typo in choice D.
