The answer comes down to subject verb agreement, really.

But suppose you have no idea whether in vitro fertilization is singular or plural?

Think of similar words. The ending --ATION is fairly common in the English.
Meditation. Adoration. Multiplication. We add S's to those words to pluralize them.
