Re: In works as enduring like Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby Dick [#permalink]
Original Sentence analysis:

In works as enduring like Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby Dick and (In X and Y structure )
those (refer to "works" ) as recent like the 2005 sci-fi film Serenity, (In X and Y -> modifier phrase -describe Main Subject "The Albatross" )

the albatross has retained (Main SV pair) its (refer to Albatross) power as a metaphor for nonhuman life.

Error Analysis: Wrong Idiomatic usage.

"as enduring like " and " as recent like " is incorrect usage of idiomatic structure. Correct structure is : as.... as

A) In works as enduring like Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby Dick and those as recent like the 2005 sci-fi film Serenity,

Idiom error as above.

B) In works so enduring as Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby Dick and those so recent as the 2005 sci-fi film Serenity,

"so enduring as" and "so recent as"-> Again Idiomatic error

C) In works as enduring as Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby Dick and those as recent as the 2005 sci-fi film Serenity,

Corrects the original idiom errors - hold

D) In works as enduring such as Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby Dick and those as recent such as the 2005 sci-fi film Serenity,

" as ... such as" - Wrong idiomatic structure.

E) In enduring works such as Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby Dick and recent works as the 2005 sci-fi film Serenity,

"such as " usage is OK.

||ism grammatically is not as good as in option C. See sentence breakdown below:
In enduring works such as Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby Dick and
In recent works as the 2005 sci-fi film Serenity (usage of such before as is required to provide better || and logical structure )

Option C is better than E. So C is correct answer. Mark C and move on.

A) In works as enduring like Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby Dick and those as recent like the 2005 sci-fi film Serenity, - Not our answer (as .... like.. is the wrong idiom structure.)

B) In works so enduring as Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby Dick and those so recent as the 2005 sci-fi film Serenity, - Not our answer (so ..... as is the wrong idiom structure)

C) In works as enduring as Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby Dick and those as recent as the 2005 sci-fi film Serenity,- This is our answer (as .... as is the right idiom structure.)

D) In works as enduring such as Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby Dick and those as recent such as the 2005 sci-fi film Serenity, - Not our answer (as .... such as is the wrong idiom structure, the terms "such as" used alone work well when giving examples and not in this context.)

E) In enduring works such as Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby Dick and recent works as the 2005 sci-fi film Serenity, - Not our answer ('enduring works such as' and 'recent works as' are not parallel.)

The OA is C.

Re: In works as enduring like Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby Dick [#permalink]
Answer: C

Correct idiomatic usage is : As X as Y.
We can eliminate A and B on basis of this.

In D, such as is used, which is also the wrong usage.
For E, the sentence tries to change the meaning by saying 'enduring works such as', while intention is to refer to works as enduring as... Moreover, the structure is not parallel, first it uses such as but later it uses 'as' to introduce an example.

Only choice left with us is C, which resolves all the errors mentioned above.
