shrutipatel
Hi,
I would request a profile evaluation. I am an Indian IT female and nervous about the programs I want to apply to. I really want to know if I am aiming just right with my list of schools. I would appreciate if you can help me here make the right choice.
Indian Female
GMAT – 650
10th- CBSE board (76 %)
12th - CBSE board (82 %)
Bachelors from Nagpur University in Civil Engineering (64 %)
Work Experience- Close to 60 months at matriculation (Fall 2015)
Senior Systems Engineer at Samsung as a SAP-Business Intelligence (SAP-BI) resource.
Volunteer work - 1) NGO - 6 years
Extracurriculars- Secretary of Tech club (4th year) and Treasurer of Electronics branch (4th year)
Why MBA ? Want to pursue management consulting at one of the 3 big firms and transition to oil and energy industry. I'll be applying in Round2.
I would really appreciate any kind of help that I can get from your side if you can list some schools I should apply to. You will see some of the choices I am thinking of - Darden, McCombs, Stern, Tepper, and Ross and others.
Hi Shruti,
Here's an assessment of your profile:
What works:
Your work experience - Good brand name (Samsung), non-typical nature of work (BI, not software development or testing) & number of years (not too much or too little)
Other factors such as promotions, scope of work, performance ratings etc. also matter - I'm assuming you have something good to show here also.
Extracurricular activities - your NGO work seems quite substantial (6 years) although you have not mentioned what kind of work you have done and what your impact has been. Since 6 years is a good time frame, I'm again assuming that you have some interesting stories to talk about here. You also have some college-level activities to highlight.
If you have been involved in other such activities at your workplace, that would be a plus.
What does not work:
Your GMAT score - given the schools you are applying to and the career switch you are trying to make, 650 is not a very competitive score. Not only is it less than the average of the schools you are targeting, consulting companies also look for high GMAT scores when they recruit you post-MBA. Sorry for being brutally honest - but if these are your goals, you should seriously consider retaking the test.
Please let me know if you have more questions.

Gowri
