I think I had 660 so we bleed the same. That's great news. Very encouraging. Ok, well, hopefully I'll get some news tomorrow.

Which do you think is better for the application?

A) 750 vs a 650
or
B) 200k a year salary vs a 70k a year salary?

I ask because, while I my GMAT is lower than most I make more money than most? I've never really read anything about that anywhere. If they notice these things, they sure don't seem to talk about it. Any thoughts?

well, my friend, you already answered the question. let's get back to definitions. GMAT is a measure of how successful you can be as a student and that's it. it's not about business potential, leadership potential, career success, etc.

so, reaching a certain point is enough for successful application

Do you really think they take into account how much you make? I know it's on the application form, but I didn't think they would care that much. If they do care I think salary counts a lot less than what you actually do in your job. If you make a lot because you have a lot of responsibility and/or have shown to be successful, then that will count for quite a bit. Enough to outweigh a mediocre GMAT I'd recon.

It is just surprising to me that they (meaning b-schools in general) never seem to talk about this issue as a factor, because the stat that people all seem to be most interested in is how much do your grads make after graduation. Naturally someone making good money before the MBA is likely to continue to make good money post MBA.

Money is so ignored that it might lead one to say that adcoms don't care. But on the other hand every single one of them wants to know how much money you made and most want to know how much money you started out making. Therefore, if wanted a top ranked school, I'd want some high earners to skew that distribution.

My theory is that they are bit embarrassed to talk about this issue finding it a tad vulgar, but that it might be an overlooked factor by most people applying who are (like me) over emphasizing the importance of the GMAT.

last week I was on IMD master class. the incoming MBA program director did speculate on this. net, b-schools have twofold concerns:
1) they want candidates with high earning potential (the more you earn now, the better)
2) at the same time they want higher average salary increase percentage (the less you earn now, the higher salary increase will be)

these 2 measures are somewhat contradicting and different b-shools balance this equation their own way. some grant scholarships to students from low-income countries just to boost salary increase stats

Yeah, the first thing I thought when I started seeing all those % Delta salary statistics was, "Wow, that is meaningless and easily gamed."

Someone who works essentially for free for a non-profit making 2k a year who switches to consulting will see a 5,000 percent increase in salary post MBA.

Someone who works in India making 8k a year will see a 1,250 percent increase in salary if they simply move to a first world country and get a job. (which might explain why everyone in India wants a foreign MBA)

I prefer the absolute figures a lot more.

I don't think it is about money at all. It is about the probability of success for an individual. B-school want someone who they can claim that because they study at our school, they become successful. More often, successful often translate into financial wealth.

Your point on 'why everyone in India wants a foreign MBA' is 200% flawed !! Indians dont want a foreign MBA, its toughest for them to afford it with the $ -> INR being 60. But its very very comptetitive to get into best B-schools in India ( if you are not Indian probably you cannot understand). Competetion is just too much. The best cannot get into IIMs. Getting into foreign B-schools is easiest for them. Still I know so many of my highly talented friends in excellent profiles who wish to do foreign MBA, have got admits from top Ivy leagues but changed their mind when they started working out with loans. Its a very tough decision.

I dont know what industry you are in but I have seen field engineers easily making 200k a year in Oil&Gas industry. Some of them here in UK dont even have degrees. Its your overall profile that would count. If you are a good candidate you are in.
