I finished with my interviews 2 days ago, so I'll share my experience, which was different to most I have read about here...
Both interviews were held in Buenos Aires, where I live. The first interviewer, even though he's very young, is one of the 5/10 most important guys in the oil industry in the country. He was surprisingly friendly and the interview was very informal. I went to his office at 9pm, but even then he kept taking work calls every 5 minutes. The interview went like this:
- First 10 minutes we talked about the situation of the oil industry in Argentina. He asked me what I thought about an oil deal he had recently closed (Currently all over the media in Arg). I tried to give him a polite but truthful answer, since I don’t really agree with what he’s doing…
- 5 minutes for the 3W questions. After that, he asked a question in English (the rest of the interview was in Spanish) about my career, but got distracted with a phone call and I never got to answer.
- Last 10 minutes he gave me advice about INSEAD
That was it, I was done in less than half and hour. I think I did well. I didn’t get a lot of feedback, he only said he was impressed by my GPA and GMAT score and that I would have no trouble keeping up with INSEAD’s pace.
Second interviewer was also under 40. Not very accomplished but from a very rich and traditional family (They hosted Jackie O when she was in Buenos Aires). The interview was 100% in Spanish and he clearly had to play “bad cop”. He was extremely rude, but from minute 1 it was obvious to me that he was faking it. The interview went like this:
- First 5 minutes he asked me to tell him about myself
- For the last 25 minutes he kept saying things like this:
- I have known you for 3 minutes and I don’t like you. I have never given a positive recommendation for INSEAD and you’ll not be the exception
- Your 780 GMAT does not mean anything. I got 610 but only prepared for a week, and in the practice tests I got everything from 600 to 790. I’m sure you got lucky during exam day
- Your University sucks, nobody knows it
- I met a lot of poor people like you at INSEAD, and I learnt we can have some things in common
- Blah, blah, blah.
I think he was trying to see how I reacted to all that crap. I kept on smiling while he insulted me and replied politely but firmly. I think I did well, because he ended up telling me that for most people an MBA at INSEAD was a waste of money, but for me it was going to be a sound investment.
That was it. I had read hundreds of posts about long, structured and hard interviews, but I got something different: Very short, disorganized and odd interviews!
I hope you find this information useful! And hope I did well in my interviews! Now I have a long and painful wait ahead of me! Good luck to you all!
