Hello everyone -
I need some input for recommendations. I would like my supervisor for a volunteer project I am part of to write one of my recommendations. However, I had a look at the type of questions they ask, and one is "Comment on the candidate's career progree to date and her career focus". My supervisor at the volunteer project does not really have much insight into my career. How should she answer this question instead? Comment instead on my focus on the volunteer project? Is this perhaps a bad choice for a reference?
Please share your thoughts! Thanks
P.s. I am listed as R1 - but am actually applying R2.
Generally, a good choice for recommenders is two people that can give different but complimentary perspectives on things that INSEAD cares about. I'll assume that you've already been to an information session and know exactly what INSEAD is looking for (international outlook, leadership, career progression, uniqueness of profile, etc), so you should find two people who can fill in gaps and reinforce each other. I chose a manager that's known me for three years and my client that's known me for over a year. Both knew my career progress, goals, aspirations, and how what I am doing now fits in with my career objectives (I had great rapport with my client). I also shared my application essays with them so they could see the overall big picture I had for myself. If your volunteer project supervisor is truly the best referrer you have, then you should have a sit down with her, maybe over coffee or dinner and bare your soul a bit more so she really knows where you've been with your career and where you want to go.
