Hi Venkycr777

670 is considered well below the average score of all top 20 MBA programs in USA and coupled with your below-average years of experience and your Indian background may be a really big red flag. My personal advice is to retake the GMAT aiming for at least 730 to get accepted to Top programs. Good luck with your prep

You must retake. Unfortunately, the scores for Indian candidates are discounted. Therefore, a 670 for an Indian candidate could be considered something below a 650 for another candidate coming from a different demographic. It sounds unfair but it's how this process operates.

There are very few aspects of an application that can change this late in the game, but the GMAT is usually one of them. Push hard and give it another go. You'll most likely be happy you did.

Hi I am Arun , 24 year old male.

I am from India.
I scored 670 (Q50/V30) in GMAT, graduated from IIT Madras 2019 batch with 4.0 GPA.
I have work experience of 2.5 years in ISRO(Indian Space Research Organisation).
That being said about my profile. I would like to know where i stand among the MBA applicants. Do i have a good shot for top 20 colleges? Or should i give GMAT again ?
I just need some guidance here. Any suggestion would be a great help.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Venkycr777,

If you are targetting the Top 20 schools (US/FT), you must definitely improve your score (especially since you will be applying in Round 2 and with only 2.5 years of experience). The good news is that you do have some scope to do so on the verbal segment and even a slight increase there will help. :-)

All the best!

The Quant score is great. See if you can potentially improve that Verbal to get closer to the median average GMATs of the schools you're interested in.

If you feel you can do better, retake the test. However, keep in mind that 670 can get you into the top MBA programs, as you can see here:

Hello Venkycr777,

I can see a lot of positives in your profile. Being an IIT alum with a 4.0 GPA is a great achievement. Your work experience at ISRO is also quite valuable and will set you apart from other applicants. If you have decent extracurricular/interest-based volunteering activities, that would give you a very holistic profile.

Coming to your concern about whether 670 is a good enough score. That depends on where you are applying and what are your career goals post MBA.

For example, the median safe score is 720+ to secure admission to the top schools, however that does not mean that applicants with less than that have not been admitted. If your career path and goals align with the ideals of the institution they will give you an admit irrespective of your score. Hence, it is important to identify the school fit and apply accordingly.

If you feel a score of 670 does not do justice to your capabilities, you should attempt the exam once more. Else start working on your motivations for an MBA and career goals essays.

Hi Arun,

Lots of unique and strong elements to your background.

The key is the critical elements for an MBA:

Leadership exposure
Innovation, ingenuity and collaboration
Success/recognition/promotions
EC's / contribution

MBA AdComs admit based on academic credentials (GMAT/GPA), work experience (the elements above) and a unique personal "brand" that would add to the depth and breath of the incoming class.

I think the last two are the key factors in deciding if your GMAT can be below the average for your target schools.
