­is there any disadvantage of it? I actually haven't given my GMAT yet and was planning to apply in R3 but i've read some posts which said that its a waste of money because the chances are very slim and the colleges don't give admissions to international students due to visa process time

­Chances are slim : YES
Waste of Money : NO

You may plan to apply some really decent schools which have waived the GMAT score requirement however they would like to see other brownie points in your profile so make an appealing application and certainly consider applying in R3.
