I applied to 6 colleges in R2, but only received admit from 1 (UNC) and got rejected without interview from the rest (Duke, Ross, Emory, Mccombs, Owen).

I’m not sure how prestigious is UNC as it’s constantly dropping in rankings. Plus it’s even worth it to do mba from top 20 without scholarship seeing current job market and H1B uncertainties.

jatinarora97 Hope you are doing greatThis is a very tricky situation when you don't have leverage to negotiate and no second option. There is definitely scope for improvement in your GMAT score, which can translate to more conversions and scholarships if you are ready to work hard on the GMAT. Many male applicants I have talked to recently try to sweep the importance of a high GMAT score under the rug and still want to apply to US T20 with an average score. The same applies to the quality of the application too. You have good credentials and diverse experience. I would have expected something from Emory, McCombs, and Owen if you think you did the application well. But I am in no position to comment on the execution of the application at this point. It's best to graduate with the least amount of loans in the current economy in the USA.

Hi Aanchal,

Thanks for the response. So this score is equivalent to GMAT classic 730. For top 20 ideally what gmat score should I target?
@jatinarora97  T20 is a wide spectrum. For Duke and Ross, certainly the higher the GMAT score the better. R2 is competitive anyway for Indian applicants. For other schools too, you fall in the most overrepresented segment within the crowded Indian pool. Your score may not be the reason for rejection but what is the score split anyway?
I hope you also had a very well-thought-out strategy for your applications.
Did you research the schools thoroughly and make a genuine effort to establish a personal connection in your applications?

Ideally, I would like to understand how you've done on your application before I pass any judgment. What did you do for one year at your startup? How well are you equipped to consider product or management consulting roles, and what kind? Product is a broad domain and the typical error candidates make is not delving further into their area of interest and desire to learn about a problem they have witnessed through their experience or to capitalize on an opportunity. The same remains true of Strategy Consulting goals.
Your application should be crafted so that each component contributes to justifying your goals and your choice of school.

Best wishes

GMAT FE 675 - QR 87/90(94%) || VR 86/90 (98%) || DI 77/90 (66%)

I sought assistance from a consulting firm to understand the process and craft compelling essays. Yes, I established a personal connection within my essays. Additionally, I researched each school thoroughly, focusing on those renowned for consulting, and identified potential admissions opportunities. While I acknowledge that gaining acceptance to dream schools is challenging, I anticipated receiving scholarships from realistic and safe schools.

Duke/Ross - Dream
Emory/Mccombs/UNC - Realistic
Owen - Safe

So my startup was related to luxury goods. I used to sell products to understand more about sales/marketing/operations prior to MBA.

The reason I'm considering strategy consulting is that when I spoke with several alumni who work in this field, their work really excited me. Plus, I already have experience as a consultant, so I believe I have skills that can easily transfer to these roles. Additionally, since I studied computer engineering in undergrad and later worked in the IT sector, a project management role is my Plan B in case strategy consulting doesn't work out.
