Re: Is |x| = 4? [#permalink]
Is |x| = 4?

(1) |11 + x| = 15
(2) 11 + |x| = 15

Solution:

Statement 1: Either x=4 or x=-26. Insufficient

Statement 2: Its direct. Rearranging the equation, we get a ' Yes'. Sufficient.

Therefore the answer is Option B.

(1) |11 + x| = 15
(2) 11 + |x| = 15

Target question: Is |x| = 4?

Statement 1: |11 + x| = 15
So, EITHER 11 + x = 15 OR 11 + x = -15
Case a: if 11 + x = 15, then x = 4. In this case, |x| = |4| = 4
Case b: if 11 + x = -15, then x = -26. In this case, |x| = |-26| = 26
Since we cannot answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: 11 + |x| = 15
Subtract 11 from both sides to get: |x| = 4
DONE!!!
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 2 is SUFFICIENT

Answer: B

Re: Is |x| = 4? [#permalink]
Statement 1 is NS because x could take the value of 4 or -26.

Statement 2 is sufficient as it could be rephrased to what is asked in the stimulus.

Correct Answer is B
