: Always prompt whether the properties of variables are defined in question stem or not. E.g. Here variables can be both +ve and -ve Case 1: x = 4 and y = 9 i.e. x < y Case 2: x = -4 and y = -9 i.e. x > y NOT SUFFICIENT STatement 2 : (2) x = -y Case 1: x = 4 and y = -4 i.e. x > y Case 2: x = 0 and y = 0 i.e. x = y (i.e. x is NOT greater than y) hence NOT SUFFICIENT COmbining the statements 9x = 4y and x = -y i.e. x = ( 4/9 )y = -y i.e. 4y = -9y i.e. y = 0 = x i.e. x is NOT greater than y hence SUFFICIENT Answer: Option C

Statement 1: \frac{9}{4}x = y . Then x and y must have the same sign. If x < 0 then we have y = \frac{9}{4}x < x , hence x > y. Vice versa if x > 0. Insufficient. Statement 2: Insufficient. Combined: In statement 1 we noted they must have the same sign, so combined with statement 2 we must have x = y= 0. Sufficient. Ans: C
