Hi Satish1313,
Since your acads aren't that great and you are in the 2-3 year work-ex range, a GMAT of 710+ is what you should target. Would be able to better advise on your chances / improvement areas if you are able to share more details on your work-ex (expand the role, achievements, etc) and extra-curricular.

Regards.

I am at present preparing for GMAT. Kindly review my profile and provide the chances of my application for ISB.

Aim: work in Tech/ consultancy profile

Questions:
1. Is there a good chance for my application in ISB?
2. Does work experience in aerospace or PSU background considered for diversity?
3. How hard it would be to change the domain after MBA?
4. How much does the profile gap impact my application? How to lessen its impact on the overall application?

Regards,
C.Ratnakar

Hi chagantiratnakar,

1) Overall, good chance of getting a call but you have to draft a really structure and simple-to-understand application. The challenge with highly technical profiles such as yours is to articulate the job responsibilities and achievements in such a way that reviewers from all backgrounds are able to appreciate. There are high chances that the adcom member who comes across your profile is not from the same field as yours. Do aim for a 700+ score

2) Yes, it is a diverse background and does grab attention, especially with your escapades with military helicopters and Lok Sabha elections. We've worked with a few candidates with interesting stories while presiding polling booths. They make for good reading and interesting interview conversations

3) You shall be able to change the industry but the core tenet of what you bring to the table would continue with you for a few years. Your goals around tech consulting are in-line with your prior experience

4) Top b-schools don't appreciate career breaks, especially for exam preparation. At this level, you are expected to multi-task and balance prep and work-ex/studies well. 2.5 years is a large gap and would be difficult to mitigate its impact. You should focus on the learning you got from that period and demonstrate clarity of future you got as a result of that

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Manan

Hi Manav,

Your profile has an interesting mix of professional and non professional experiences. However, you are likely to face strong competition when it comes to academics.

1. Getting an admit letter depends on the overall preparation across your essays, interviews. What we offer is a real assessment of your strengths and focus areas where you would need the most support. This is a balanced profile and you can put your best foot forward through good preparation.

2. If you are getting a consistent 20-30 point increase in your mock scores and provided your GMAT retake leaves you with enough time to prepare your essays, LORs, interview and resume, you could wait and apply with a higher score to make your profile stronger.

3. It would be good to focus on your teaching and professional experience in strategy to explain how that will help you transition towards your post MBA goals.

For detailed discussion, feel free to reach out to us :)

All the best with your application.

Hello UltraHighVoltage,
Some nice WE and EC there. However, a GMAT of 690 would be below the average GMAT score of 710 for ISB. You may want to target 710 at least, though you should definitely apply even if you have a 690.
I don’t have a sense of your post-MBA goals from your description and that will play a huge part in your application.
In all, your profile is competitive, but currently focus on getting a good GMAT score.
Hope this helps.

Hello Prashanthkonduru,
Your academic background (CA) will help you distinguish from the largely engineer applicant pool, but you will still be compared to the people similar to your background.
You have worked in Audit with interactions with senior leadership. However, what you would want to stress in your essays, application and interview is how you made an impact, initiatives you took and leadership you demonstrated. You may also want to highlight your international experience.
Your post-MBA goals are achievable with your current WE and academic profile.
With respect to your GMAT score, I see Verbal is your weak spot. You may want to bring it close to the ISB GMAT average of 710. IF you think you have given your all to GMAT and cannot push it any further, you can still apply with a 690. Your profile will still be competitive. Remember it will take at least 4-6 weeks to put together a competitive application.
Hope this helps.

Hii

First of all thank you in advance for evaluating my profile.

Academics:

    1) 10th -87.8%
    2) 12th Science - 79%
    3) Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering -Gujarat Technological University - 8.5 CGPA (~80%)

Work Experience

I have been working in German MNC (in India) as a Plant layout and piping design engineer since July 2014. So as of now my total Work experience is 6 years. My current position is: Senior Executive Engineer. From Last 2 years along with my work in company I have been managing and training 2-3 Junior engineers.

I have 3 months of International experience, I had worked in our German office for 3 months

Extra curricular

During my college days, I had worked as Mathematics Paper setter and supervisor in private coaching classes, conducted tuition classes for Std 5-8 students living in my society. Also helped 2 students, who were weak in Mathematics, to score their best in JEE entrance examination.

I have co founded 3 Start ups. We group of 2 members worked upon all threes.

    1) fkcashback.com - (Company not registered) - Idea was to give cashback to every buyer who purchases online products through us.
    2) studyguru.in - We have made a website for engineering learning videos. After 1 year because of crunch of money we have closed it.
    3) Teawala - Cafe - First start up for which we have registered a company. Along with my current job I have managed this for almost 1.5 years. Later on because of management problems we have sold it.This cafe has been operational since 2016. Even in covid crisis they have managed to survive. My partner was working out of town so majority of on floor decisions were made by me.

Apart from these 3 I had worked upon other 2 Ideas for quite sometime but have not mentioned here.

Future goals

Short term: Gaining some management experience after finishing my MBA. Area of Interest: Strategy, Consulting.
Long term: I want to start my own business in future.

Thanks

Hi Thelionking1234, considering your goal (and past experience) of entrepreneurship, strategy consulting might not be a best fit short term goal. Working in a high-growth startup may be a better alignment.

However, all this can be brainstormed later. Your immediate and utmost priority has to be on getting a 700+ score on GMAT.

Hi Prashanthkonduru, very decent profile overall: Chartered accountancy degree, employment with Franklin Templeton, professional certifications are all a big thumps up. I understand you are flexible on post-MBA goals, but you need to zero down upon one that would most align with your professional experience and educational qualification.

Hi Manav, you have a decent shot at ISB, though any GMAT score higher than your current score of 690 will definitely improve your chances further.

I am very comfortable with your goals, since you seem to have already had a stint of working in strategy role, at Reliance. Seamless articulation and story buildup should be your focus, in your essays.

[list]Short term: Gaining some management experience after finishing my MBA. Area of Interest: Strategy, Consulting.

Thank you for your prompt response.

Can you comment whether overall profile is good or I will have some drawbacks?
