Since the answer choices are somewhat spread apart, we can probably use some estimation...

Jessica can text 85 words per minute, while Maurice can text 10 words per minute
So, COMBINED, they can text 95 words per minute
Let's round this up to 100 words per minute
So, the number of words PER HOUR = (100)(60) = 6000
And, the number of words PER DAY = (24)(6000) ≈ (25)(6000) ≈ 150,000

So, COMBINED, the two people can text approximately 150,000 words per day

Working together, how many days will it take Jessica and Maurice to text 410,400 words?
Time = output/rate
= 410,400/150,000
≈3

Answer: C

Given that Jessica can text 85 words per minute, while Maurice can text 10 words per minute. An abridged English translation of Tolstoy’s War and Peace contains 410,400 words. And we need to find Working together, how many days will it take Jessica and Maurice to text the entire abridged translation of War and Peace?

Rate of Jessica = 85 words/min

Rate of Maurice = 10 words/min

When they work together then their Combined Rate = Rate of Jessica + Rate of Maurice = 85 + 10 = 95words/min

Using, Rate * Time = Work Done

=> 95 words/min * Time = 410,400 words

=> Time = 410,400/95 mins = 4,320mins = 4320/60 hours = 72hours = 72/24 days = 3 days

So, Answer will be C

Combined, they can text 95 words per minute.

So they will take 410,400 / 95 = 4320 mins to type the entire book

which is 4320/(60*24) days = 3 days

Since the answer choices are reasonably spaced out, we can approximate and save time

Combined words per day = 95*60*24 which should be something close to 150000 (i.e 100*25*60)

410400/150000 will be closest to only 3,

So, Answer should be C.

Combined Rate = 85+10

95*Time = 41400

Time in Days = 41400/(95*60*24)

I followed this question perfectly until I got to the 410400/95 part to get the total minutes it would take. Is there a math shortcut for this because fumbled with the long division along time

hi gradyf,

Not likely that you will see such intensive calculations..
But if you such a Q..

Combined speed 85+10=95 words/min..
so 410400 words in \(\frac{410400}{95*60*24}\) days..

Now see if choices can help you...
4104 is a multiple of 9 as 4+1+0+4 is multiple of 9.....
4104 is also a multiple of 19 as the Denominator 95 is a multiple of 19 and NONE of the choices have 19..
also 4104 is a multiple of 8 as LAST 3 digits 104 is multiple of 8....
when you multiply 9*19*8, you realize only another 3 is required to reach 4104...
so \(\frac{19*9*8*3*100}{19*5*60*8*3}=\frac{9*10*5*2}{5*3*2*10}=3\)

ofcourse still calculations are there but slightly lesser work

Together they can text 85 + 10 = 95 words per minute, which means they can text 95 x 60 = 5,700 words per hour. Therefore, if we let x = the number of hours it takes for them to text the entire abridged translation of War and Peace, we have:

5,700x = 410,400

x = 410,400/5,700

x = 72 hours

Assuming they work 24 hours a day, it will take them 72/24 = 3 days to text the entire abridged translation of War and Peace.

Answer: C

Total words per minute = 85+10=95
Total words =410400
Time required = 410400/95 = 4320 minutes = 72 hours = 3 days

IMO C

Maurice's rate 10 w/m
Combined 95 words per minute;

410,400/95 = 4320 Minutes;
4320/(24*60)= 3 Days.

Combined rate of Maurice and Jessica is \(10 + 85 = 95\) \(\frac{words}{minute}\)

\(Rate = \frac{Work}{Time}\)

\(95 = \frac{410,400}{Time}\)

\(Time = \frac{410,400}{95} minutes\)

Converting into days: \(\frac{410,400}{95}\) \(minutes\) \(*\) \(\frac{1}{60}\) \(\frac{hour}{minutes}\) \(*\) \(\frac{1}{24}\) \(\frac{day}{hours}\)

The minutes and hours cancel out to give the number of days. Solving the expression yields,
3 days, Ans C

Jessica and Maurice can text 95 words in 1 minute. To text the book together they need = 410,400/ 95*60 hour = 432/6 = 72 hour or 3 days.


C is the answer.

so every minute both can text 95 words and total words are 410400 words
so total minutes required = 410400 / 95
= 4320 minutes
now convert in days
4320 / ( 60* 24) = 3 days

combined rate = 85 + 10 = 95 w/min
work = 410,400
time = 410,400/95m = 4320m = 4320m/60m = 72h = 72h/24d = 3days
