Jim’s teacher asked him to determine whether a sample of a substance contained iron. Jim knew that magnets attract iron, so he placed a magnet near the substance. Jim concluded that the substance did contain iron, because the substance became attached to the magnet.
Jim’s reasoning is questionable in that it fails to consider the possibility that
(A) iron sometimes fails to be attracted to magnets
(B) iron is attracted to other objects besides magnets
(C) the magnet needed to be oriented in a certain way
(D) magnets attract substances other than iron
(E) some magnets attract iron more strongly than others

IMO ...D ..if there are other elements which get attracted to magnet ..Jim's reasoning is not sufficient to conclude ..sample of substance contained iron

Answer is D
A- if iron sometimes fails to be attracted to magnet then Jim's reasoning is not questionable as in this the material gets attracted which proves that there is iron in the substance. So INCORRECT
B- Even if iron is attracted to other objects but it doesn't mean that there is no iron in the substance as it does get attracted to magnet and Jim used magnet here.
C- It doesn't question Jim's reasoning.
E- If some magnets attract iron more strongly than others then that does'nt question his reasoning.
Also, Is this a GMAT type question chetan2u Bunuel GMATGuruNY ?
