Q1. Economics professor: Marty’s Pizza and Checkers Pizza are the two major pizza parlors in our town. Marty’s sold coupon books including coupons good for one large plain pizza at any local pizza parlor, at Marty’s expense. But Checkers refused to accept these coupons, even though they were redeemed by all other local pizza parlors. Accepting them would have cost Checkers nothing and would have satisfied those of its potential customers who had purchased the coupon books. This shows that Checkers’s motive in refusing to accept the coupons was simply to hurt Marty’s Pizza. Which one of the following, if assumed, enables the economics professor’s conclusion to be properly drawn? (A) Any company that refuses to accept coupons issued by a competitor when doing so would satisfy some of the company’s potential customers is motivated solely by the desire to hurt that competitor. (B) Any company that wishes to hurt a competitor by refusing to accept coupons issued by that competitor will refuse to accept them even when accepting them would cost nothing and would satisfy its potential customers. (C) At least one company has refused to accept coupons issued by its major local competitor simply in order to hurt that competitor, even though those coupons were accepted by all other local competitors. (D) Any company that accepts its major competitor’s coupons helps its competitor by doing so, even if it also satisfies its own actual or potential customers. (E) If accepting coupons issued by a competitor would not enable a company to satisfy its actual or potential customers, then that company’s refusal to accept the coupons is motivated by the desire to satisfy customers. Q2. While most scholarship on women’s employment in the United States recognizes that the Second World War (1939—1945) dramatically changed the role of women in the workforce, these studies also acknowledge that few women remained in manufacturing jobs once men returned from the war. But in agriculture, unlike other industries where women were viewed as temporary workers, women’s employment did not end with the war. Instead, the expansion of agriculture and a steady decrease in the number of male farm workers combined to cause the industry to hire more women in the postwar years. Consequently, the 1950s saw a growing number of women engaged in farm labor, even though rhetoric in the popular media called for the return of women to domestic life. Which of the following statements about women’s employment in the United States during and after the Second World War is most clearly supported by the passage? A. Most women who joined the workforce during the Second World War wanted to return to domestic life when the war ended. B. The great majority of women who joined the workforce during the Second World War were employed in manufacturing jobs. C. The end of the Second World War was followed by a large-scale transfer of women workers from manufacturing to agriculture. D. The increase in women’s employment that accompanied the Second World War was longer lasting in agriculture than it was in manufacturing. E. The popular media were more forceful in calling for women to join the workforce during the Second World War than in calling for women to return to domestic life after the war.

hard to answer man... it has a number of variables but the more harder questions (medium and hard) you can get right, the better for the score. The range could be huge but I feel if you can get half of the Medium ones right, you should be around yoru target.

Q1. Political Commentator: During the previous presidential administration, members of congress approved large tax cuts and yet the economy today stands in shambles. During the current economic crisis, those who espouse large tax cuts as an economic stimulus should consider the failure of tax cuts during the past eight years to prevent the current economic recession as conclusive evidence that tax cuts will not help the country escape from its current economic troubles.

Which of the following, if true, most weakens the argument above?

(A) The large tax cuts of the past administration targeted the capital gains on the financial investments of the ultra-rich while proponents of tax cuts today suggest cutting payroll taxes for both employers and employees.

(B) Economists from across the spectrum now agree that tax cuts helped stem the country’s most severe recession in history, which occurred about 70 years ago prior to industrialization in this country.

(C) Economists from across the spectrum predict that if Congress fails to pass the tax-cut legislation, which also includes government spending and much more, it could well be 15 years before the economy escapes the current recession.

(D) Economists from across the spectrum agree that these tax cuts will add less to the fiscal deficit than the tax cuts of the previous administration.

(E) During the most recent political campaign cycle, which featured many deceptive political attacks, the governor of a prosperous state attacked those who opposed tax cuts by citing his own state’s ostensible prosperity.

Q1. In order to withstand tidal currents, juvenile horseshoe crabs frequently burrow in the sand. Such burrowing discourages barnacles from clinging to their shells. When fully grown, however, the crabs can readily withstand tidal currents without burrowing, and thus they acquire substantial populations of barnacles. Surprisingly, in areas where tidal currents are very weak, juvenile horseshoe crabs are found not to have significant barnacle populations, even though they seldom burrow.

Which of the following, if true, most helps to explain the surprising finding?

(A) Tidal currents do not themselves dislodge barnacles from the shells of horseshoe crabs.

(B) Barnacles most readily attach themselves to horseshoe crabs in areas where tidal currents are weakest.

(C) The strength of the tidal currents in a given location varies widely over the course of a day.

(D) A very large barnacle population can significantly decrease the ability of a horseshoe crab to find food.

(E) Until they are fully grown, horseshoe crabs shed their shells and grow new ones several times a year.

Q1. “Physicalists” expect that ultimately all mental functions will be explainable in neurobiological terms. Achieving this goal requires knowledge of neurons and their basic functions, a knowledge of how neurons interact, and a delineation of the psychological faculties to be explained. At present, there is a substantial amount of fundamental knowledge about the basic functions of neurons, and the scope and character of such psychological capacities as visual perception and memory are well understood. Thus, as the physicalists claim, mental functions are bound to receive explanations in neurobiological terms in the near future.

Which one of the following indicates an error in the reasoning in the passage?

(A) The conclusion contradicts the claim of the physicalists.

(B) The passage fails to describe exactly what is currently known about the basic functions of neurons.

(C) The word “neurobiological” is used as though it had the same meaning as the word “mental.”

(D) The argument does not indicate whether it would be useful to explain mental functions in neurobiological terms.

(E) The passage does not indicate that any knowledge has been achieved about how neurons interact.

However, most major manufacturers manipulate and even create consumer demand, as anyone who watches television knows. Since even mainstream economic theorists watch television, their motive in advancing this theory must be something other than disinterested concern for scientific truth.

The claim that manufactures manipulate and create consumer demand plays which one of the following roles in the argument?

(A) It is one of the claims on which the conclusion is based
(B) It is the conclusion of the argument
(C) It states the position argued against
