I'm applying to Kellogg R2 and based in NYC. I would prefer an off-campus interview but I'm realistically going to be submitting right on their Jan 7 deadline. Anyone have any tips - do I request the off-campus or just go on-campus at this point? Thanks!

Guys I am applying for R2 and have a question about one of the essays
Essay 1: What’s the greatest obstacle you’ve overcome -

I got laid-off during 2008 recession and I was on a H1B visa so it was a struggle to find another job within the short period of time amidst the crisis, esp considering the fact that I had graduated recently from college and required visa sponsoring. There is another story connected to this as well.. Is this a good topic for an obstacle essay?
In other words, obstacle - something that was induced upon us by nature/3rd person blah or something we induced upon ourself (more like failure).

For any essay like this, I feel it is important to show learning and address the second part of that prompt (How has overcoming this obstacle prepared you to achieve success now and in the future?) strongly. What did you learn from that 2008 situation?

Addressing that second part will really round out the essay. You don't want the reader to walk away asking, "and...so what?"

I got dinged by Kellogg, so just my two cents. :-D

Hi guys,

Should I start over another application? I started working on my R2 app and I wanted to verify the format of the questions on the recommendation form. I wasn't sure if each question had individual text boxes or if it was one long form, and I wanted to provide this info to my recommenders. So I created a dummy account thinking that I could just delete this test recommender account later but I realized that I can only deactivate it. How odd would this look or will it just be ignored? I used a spam email account that I have for it and I don't want to risk anything. I'd have to get a different email account to start another application.

Can anybody shed some light on funding opportunities available (scholarships) for 1-year MBA students? Thanks.

That's fine. A lot of people do that and Kellogg won't connect your other account back to you.

FROM Kellogg MBA Blog: Student Perspective: Reflections and Resolutions

Share your resolutions and reflections at OurKellogg.com

Just as finals were wrapping up fall quarter at Kellogg, we asked students, “What is one way you have been transformed this year? How will you transform the world in 2014?” Read their responses below, and share your own using #MyKellogg and by visiting OurKellogg.com.

The first quarter at Kellogg made me aware of things I had only heard about before—the camaraderie of a business school, the wide knowledge of multiple subjects, the ins and outs of networking, and endless group assignments! I am a work in progress, but I have definitely become more social than I was before coming to school.

For 2014, I am not sure if I can take one big bang step to modify the world, but I would like to take advantage of the several volunteering opportunities at Kellogg, such as Kellogg Cares, to impact the community around me.

— Aftab Khanna ’15

First and foremost, I got engaged this fall. I proposed to my now fiancée in one our favorite spots, Regents Park in London!

Over the past year, I like to think that I’ve become better at time and energy management—from balancing academics to Kellogg commitments (extracurricular and social) to fitness (did two half-IRONMANs this year) to travel/adventure (took five international trips) to Chicago activities (I am fortunate to sit on the board of an education foundation) to friends and family, etc., etc. In other words, the typical MBA life. I have gotten better at prioritizing, understanding my limits and saying no.

In 2014, I hope to start a company!

— Matthew Zafirovski ’14

I’ve become more introspective and aware of my own strengths and weaknesses. Being challenged in subject areas and really realizing what I need to do to be successful in school and in my career has made me more thoughtful of the choices I’m making and where I need to focus my efforts in recruiting and classes.

— Jordana Cohen ’15

I fell in love with traveling and I would love to have the opportunity to work internationally for an extended period in my career. I would often find myself talking to my international classmates about their countries and listening to the passion in their voice as they would describe to me their countries, customs and cuisines. Last year I had the opportunity to travel to some amazing places, such as France, Spain, Brazil, Colombia and St Croix, and I realized how similar people are around the world.

For the upcoming year I have made a vow to achieve an epic level of greatness on a daily basis and share that greatness with the world. I am hoping that this passion for greatness will become contagious and will inspire others to do the same. #BeGreat

— Rahshiene Taha ’14

I didn’t really believe this going into business school, but it really does transform you. It’s hard to pinpoint why or even how, but I know that the way I think, the way I respond and the way I act towards situations has dramatically changed—for the better. I’m much more aware of my surroundings and the forces that influence them, which I believe in turn will help me make a positive impact on the world. They do say, “change yourself, change the world,” right?

Don't know if this is the right forum for school selection, but here are my 2 cents. I would attend Kellogg in your case. There is very little to compare between both Sloan and Kellogg when it comes to overall reputation (although parent institution MIT scores way ahead vis-a-vis Northwestern, we will strictly restrict our comparison to b-schools). Kellogg is hotbed for consulting. Although relatively weaker in finance, VC jobs are going to be difficult in either schools.

I have made it to kellogg too (but w/o $$), so my opinion may be biased. I would say your visit to both campuses will give you a better fit. Both Boston and Chicago are astonishingly cold right now, latter is cold as well as windy.

You will hardly go wrong with either schools, but sacrificing 90K scholarship is a real hard bargain as far as I am concerned.

Good luck.

Quick question about goals - I have a business idea (tech/web) and I am working towards it. I want an MBA before I launch this product because I have already tried starting my own firm and failed. I am briefly explaining my business idea in the essay. Should I say a) that I want to launch this product and start my own firm straight after graduation or
b)say that I want to work at a company for few years before I launch my product.

If a) then I have been hearing a lot about schools taking the employment statistics into consideration and might look negatively on those applicants who want to start their own firm post graduation
if b) Should I talk about my business plan then? does it sound ok to say that i am working on an idea but will launch it after getting few years of work experience?. Also, is it bad to say that I want to work at a startup without knowing how many startup companies actually come for recruitment.

I am almost done with my essays but i started reading forums etc online and got confused. I know this is kinda last min but I still have time and want to ensure that I submit the best application. I appreciate the help.

Hmm... I think, best way to go for essays is to look at them objectively. One should not delve into factors that are outside of our control such as employment statistics etc. If entrepreneurship is what you are aiming at from your b-school, so be it. One aspect you should consider though is that Kellogg asks both 'short-term' and 'long-term' goals. If you go with your option (a), will you be able to address this question properly? If yes, then go for (a). If not, then you will need to do homework on why you really failed in your initiative in the first place? Did you fail because you could not market your product or did you fail because you lacked the know-how of running a successful organization? In either case, a quality b-school education will help you, but you also need to consider whether working at a world-class firm for 2-3 years, acquiring transferable skills and then utilizing them towards your long-term passion (i.e. entrepreneurship) makes more sense (??)

I think, b-school apps really help us re-analyze our goals. Hope, this helps.

Thanks Shreays for your msg. Ideally I would like to work for a year or two before starting my own firm because I might not have the money to repay my loans if I go the startup route, etc but I don't think I can mention those reasons in my essay. If I project option b), then does it really make sense to talk about my business plan and say I want to launch this one day? Does that sound convincing? Will they think that why does one want to wait if the person is already working on a business idea? Also, looking at the employment stats I don't think many startups recruits b-school applicants. So, will the adcom be less impressed if I say that I want to work at a startup?

I remember a user called adcom and they were not flexible with recommendation letters. You have to call to find out yourself.

Fellow Kellogg applicants, how are you handling the Kellogg video essay? :(
I have been practicing for quite sometime and never realized it would be so tough to talk to something that does not react ... and 90 seconds never felt this long.......

People who have already done this, it will be helpful if you can share some tips.

Thanks!!
