Imagine ... Kryzak goes to Haas and after taking a few courses and getting exposed to people from all kinds of backgrounds, he realizes that he wants to pursue a career in Marketing. He starts talking to recruiters, and they tell him, "Dude, with your non-marketing background, you should have applied to Kellogg to get top Marketing jobs."

Pure evil you Neo...

I voted for Haas. As we've discussed, with your future ambitions, I think it is the best fit, but you can't go wrong with either option. See you at Haas in a couple of weeks!

btw, I voted Haas.

In Asia (my experiences are with Taiwan, China, and Japan), Berkeley's brand name is tremendous. Especially since you're interested in tech entrepreneurship, nothing there is better than the triple threat (BS Engineering + MS Engineering + MBA) from places like Berkeley and/or MIT.

In Asia, the only people who will know that Kellogg is a UE vs Haas a near-UE/almost-UE will be at the ibanks/pe firms/big consulting shops. With your goals, you probably won't comes across these guys all that often (or at least need anything from them). From a tech standpoint, a lot of new asian business is funded through angel investors; these guys are usually friends of friends of friends and not top MBA grads. They are people who have inherited money from their families/have built up their businesses from the ground up/or just got super lucky with being in the right place at the right time. These "laymen" make up the business micro-communities in Asia and, from their standpoint, Berkeley > NW.

Also, you'd probably need to hire a team in Asia. Engineers in China now are known to be fairly superficial. If they see an opportunity to work with a guy with some better names on their resume, they'll take it. Doing your degree from Berkeley will impress them more than a degree from NW (again, these guys are not all that familiar with US schools).

For NON-Asia, how the heck do you build up a decent network with silicon valley from Evanston? Seems like networking opps/VC attention/the tech world is located near Haas. Of course, you can go to NW and hustle to make the appropriate connections. But why?

Kry, the success of your ent is going to be more up to you than your school. Your idea, business plan (school will help develop skills to do that but all could do that), hardwork, your ability to network. You will be successful where ever you go, we have faith in you. There are arguments for both Haas and Kellogg. Diversify your profile with Kellogg. Location for Haas.

We all know you have your mind made up 99% and we arent going to change that no matter how much we try to talk sense into you.

LOL! I totally agree river, and I believe in *most* fields, it's really dependent upon the person, not the school. People going to non UE schools can still get into PE or VC if they work hard at it (I know a couple in real life), and people from H/S could do terribly if they don't work at all (thus the bad stereotype of "sense of entitlement" they get).

Entrepreneurship will be helped by a lot of contacts, as well as my own business plan, which is where location matters. Gary, great post btw, kudos! The ability to just say, "hey, can I come over for coffee Tuesday afternoon" with a VC or startup versus "Can I meet with you during spring break or on my VC/Startup trek week?" is quite obvious.

Gary, also great stuff on the Asian perspective. When I lived in Taiwan, I remember people knowing Berkeley MORE than Stanford. When I said I was going to Berkeley for undergrad, they were super excited, and when I mentioned Stanford, they're like, "oh, that's a good school, right?" I'm glad to hear that China and Japan are similar. Those are countries where I can see myself doing international business.

Like many said, I can't go wrong, but I can make things easier on myself.

Contrary to what you believe river, I'm actually not 99% sure. The Kellogg culture, name, and Austin Scholarship does affect me, and I'm actually less sure of Haas than I originally was. I'm actually closer to 70-30 right now between Haas and Kellogg. DAH and DAK will make and break the decision it seems. This poll is just here to see if there's anything I missed, and it's kind of fun for people during this stressful period.

I voted Haas, purely because of the details in your post and..

Kellogg isn't exactly a dream school for you
You want to stay in CA and in the Tech industry
You'll be what many people call, a BIG fish in a small pond
I want you to somehow give your K admit to someone who wouldn't think twice on K (someone like me...)

BTW...to me, your post seems as though you've already made up your mind on Haas

Unfortunately, not yet. Otherwise the last week would not have been so agonizing (and a few more weeks to come). If Kellogg didn't offer me the scholarship, it would have been an easy choice, but now it's tough. Leaning Haas, but by no means a done deal.

I voted Haas, seems to fit the bill for you. And that's coming from someone who was dinged by K, and wasn't even eligible to apply for Haas due to their admissions requirements (so hopefully, an unbiased view)

The key factors seem to be silicon valley, Entrepreneurship and links with Asia.. and a lesser key factor... Weather

If you're interested in exchanges, K gives you more choice in Asia - Keio (Japan), HKUST (HK), Tsingua (Beijing)
Haas only offers HKUST (HK).

I voted Anderson purely to help our yield number for next year's ranking.

Sounds like you have made up your mine for Haas which makes sense for what you want to do long term. The only negative I see is everyone at Haas seems to be either social responsibility or high tech so there will be a lot of people going after the same jobs you are going after. I know a lot of the same tech firms come to Anderson, but there is something to be said about living in the valley.

toga, very true, Haas' offers for Asian exchanges is really limiting. Anderson has the most varied set of schools and I really like their quarter system where you don't lose too much time if you do an exchange (especially since I won't be doing the traditional IB/Consulting recruiting Fall quarter 2nd year).

Socalconsult, you are correct, the competition will be fierce at Haas for tech stuff, but then again, it's similar to people who want to do entertainment going to Anderson and Stern, people who want to do marketing going to Kellogg, and people who want to do PE going to Harvard and Stanford. Everyone at those schools went there to do the popular stuff. In the end, I have to shine through to get the job, no matter which school I go to. :) But I think the key draw for Haas is the vicinity to all the companies I would like to work for (big or small). Sorry about the yield though... lots of very good GMATClubbers thinking of going to Anderson too! Go work on them, haha :-D

Kryzak,

As someone who has been working in the Greater China tech industry for over 5 years...and worked in silicon valley before that....I can objectively say that: tech+entrpreneurship+asia+cali = Berkeley/Haas trumps Kellogg by FAR.

With any other line of work or any other locations, I would say maybe give Kellogg a good look. But in your case, no way.

In Greater China, the only people who have heard of Kellogg are some of the folks who work at Mckinsey, Bain, etc. Some people from the states might have heard of Northwestern and think its a decent school. That's about it. With Berkeley, EVERYONE knows the school and straight up go WOW you went to Berkeley?? and bow down. Seriously. This side of the world, the Berkeley name carries a prestige that is only matched by Harvard, MIT, and Stanford. There are so many rich, successful, and even famous Berkeley alums in Asia that the network is incredible and Kellogg doesn't even come close. And in the tech industry?? Kellogg is pretty much non-existent. When you decide to come to Asia, you can get in touch with any of the Berkeley Clubs of Beijing, Shanghai, HongKong, SHenzhen, and Taipei, which are all active with tons of members. Not only do they have regular events (some Haas only, most for all Berkeley), they also often hold events and mixers with other top alum clubs such as all the Ivys, Stanford, MIT, etc. I have never heard of Kellogg or NW being much in the picture at all. In fact, schools like USC and NYU have a stronger presence here over NW. Even when you just go out and about, you're constantly running into Berkeley grads, and you'll instantly make new friends.

During my time here, I have easily met 100+ Berkeley alums without even trying. I have met 1 NW grad. And I think 1 Kellogg grad. That should give you an idea.

Now going back to the topic of entrepreneurship, you need the network of a strong engineering school. Haas has programs that allows you to work with the engineering school to start companies. Of course, Berkeley's engineering is THE best in the world along with MIT/Stanford, so I don't think you can get better than that. Add Silicon Valley connection into the picture, and pretty much its a no brainer.

PM me if you have any questions about Berkeley in Asia.
