Understanding the argument -
Last Year - LY
Raw pulp (RP)- 100
Fresh Pulp (FP) - say 210 (it has to be over twice)
In 2010
FP >210
RP more than equal to 210 (sorry, I don't know how to add more than equal to sign here
)
Option Elimination -
A. In 2010 the paper industry will use at least twice as much recycled pulp as it did last year - RP in 2010 "i.e. more than equal to 210" is more than equal to 100. Yes, because 210 is more than 100. Correct.
B. In 2010 the paper industry will use at least twice as much total pulp as it did last year. - Total pulp in 2010 - more than equal to 420 units. Total pulp LY - more than equal to 300 or 310 in our example. Is 420 at least twice of 300 or 310 - No.
C. In 2010 the paper industry will produce more paper from a given amount of pulp than it did last year. - Not shared in the argument. Out of scope.
D. As compared with last year, in 2010 the paper industry will make more paper that contains only recycled pulp. - Let me dig a bit deeper into this option for clarity. First, let's unpack the question into simple English.
RP in 2010 = more than equal to 210
RP in LY = 100
So RP in 2010 is more than LY - passage supports this. But the problem is in "more paper that contains only recycled pulp."
Say in LY combining RP and FP, the industry produced 20 units of paper that only contained RP and 80 units of mixed paper using RP and FP.
In 2010, with FP>210 + RP more than equal to 210 - say, they produced 20 units of paper only using RP and 180 units of mixed paper using RP and FP. Because the argument never told us that the paper containing only fresh pulp is more. In our example above, as we can see, the paper containing only RP is still 20 units in 2010 (same as LY), while the paper containing a mix of RP and FP is the majority. This is a classic distortion example. It tries to use the familiar words from the argument and creates a response that is not supported by the passage to confuse readers. Distortion.
E. As compared with last year, in 2010 the paper industry will make less paper that contains only fresh pulp. - In 2010, as compared to LY, FP is > 210. It is more than 210 i.e. the FP usage in LY. So this is wrong.
